The story of Mia and her family and friends at the Calivista Motel continues in this powerful, hilarious, and resonant sequel to the award-winning novel Front Desk. Mia Tang thinks she's going to have the best year ever. She and her parents are the proud owners of the Calivista Motel, Mia gets to run the front desk with her best friend, Lupe, and she's finally getting somewhere with her writing! But as it turns out, sixth grade is no picnic... 1. Mia's new teacher doesn't think her writing is all that great. And her entire class finds out she lives and works in a motel! 2. The motel is struggling, and Mia has to answer to the Calivista's many, many worried investors. 3. A new immigration law is looming and if it passes, it will threaten everything -- and everyone -- in Mia's life. It's a roller coaster of challenges, and Mia needs all of her determination to hang on tight. But if anyone can find the key to getting through turbulent times, it's Mia Tang!

Y‘all this book was So Good. It genuinely made me cry several times, an all too relevant story about hatred and racism in the lives of immigrants through the eyes of a tenacious and resourceful young girl who‘s going to change the world one person at a time.

I loved Front Desk and now that we are on summer break I can finally get to this one. Yang starts off strong with immigration laws and other racist behavior. #friendship #California #motels #AsianAmericans

In this sequel to Front Desk, Mia Tang and her family are the proud new owners of the motel they bought from their landlord. But Mia‘s best friend, Lupe, fears her undocumented father will be deported to Mexico, under the looming threat of California Proposition 187. However, author Kelly Yang puts enough love into this fictional retelling of a turbulent time in California history that there‘s plenty of room for hope.🏮#mayreads2021

I was so glad that I could go back and visit Mia, her family, friends and everyone at the Calivista Motel. I love how Mia and her friends stand up for what they believe in and don‘t let being young stand in their way. Can‘t wait until the next installment comes out!

Yang‘s sequel to her award winning Front Desk comes out in September & it‘s another delightful read. Mia Tang is back along with her friends Lupe & Jason, her parents & the quirky cast of regulars at the Calivista Hotel. Immigration is once again front & center. Yang deals with the subject adroitly, highlighting many of the challenges immigrants face as well as celebrating the joys of being part of a multicultural community. Great for MG readers.
