The writing style is muddy, the plot drags, and I‘m getting tired of the dual timeline bit. However, the historical details about San Francisco were great and kept me going. I also enjoyed getting to know Al Sullivan, and hope that in subsequent books, he‘ll embrace his birth identity.

Two murders in the Claremont Hotel spanning two decades. Is Madam Chiang Kai-Shek involved, or is the ghost of Iris Stafford seeking vengeance?

Very cute, but probably could‘ve been shorter. An enjoyable read, and I‘d be open to reading the other books in the series!

Author and Academy Award-winning screenwriter John Ridley looks at both the development of the Civil Rights movement in America and the weird world of DC comics continuity through the eyes of some of DC‘s Black, Asian, Latinx, and LGBTQ+ heroes.

By writing masterfully from the viewpoints of 6 different characters (nailing their individual voices) from the 1970s to 2010, Ridley deepens the DCU in gripping and thoughtful ways.

Wang explores many topics from friendship and strict parents to childhood illness and not being seen as Chinese enough or American enough. I really enjoyed exploring these topics through Christine's struggles as she navigates self expression, academics, friendship, and family to find where she belongs.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Exquisitely illustrated with heart-warming messages about patience, kindness, and inclusivity, without the need of extensive dialogue to convey them, as Jun navigates a new home and school. Cleverly designed, too! After you read it, look under the dust jacket for a lovely nod to one of the story's characters.
