Despite the devil on the cover & Lavalle's reputation as a fine horror author, the only supernatural elements of this novel are the protagonist's love of & encyclopedic memory of horror movies. The inside cover labels "The Ecstatic" as a misfit picaresque, in the line of novels like "Confederacy of Dunces" & "World According to Garp." The book tackles mental illness in the protagonist's family during the mishaps he endures.
