On a tiny lighthouse island far from the rest of the world, a hermit lives out his existence. Every week a supply boat leaves provisions, yet the fishermen never leave their boat, and never meet him. Years spent on this deserted rock, with imagination his sole companion, has made the lighthouse keeper something more than alone, something else entirely. For him, what lies beyond the horizon might be... nothing. And so, why would you ever want to leave? But, one day, as curiosity gets the better of him, a new boatman steps onto the island. Intertwining tenderness, despair, and humour, Alone captures how someone can be an everyman, and every man is someone.

An isolated man lives in a lighthouse with his goldfish, a book, and very little contact to the outside world. What a fantastic book. It's the kind of graphic novel that's fast and easy to read but you force yourself to slow down so you can savour it. You can really feel the emotions and the seascape in this one, despite (or because of?) the fact that there are so few words.

A graphic novel masterpiece about isolation, imagination, and letting go of fear. A hermit lives alone in a lighthouse with a dictionary and a goldfish as company. More alone than any covid lockdown. The cinematic style of French cartoonist Chabouté evokes the sounds of waves and gulls as well as the sense of remoteness. There are few words: this powerful story is all about emotions. #Translation by Ivanka Hahnenberger. #graphicnovel #comics

In this graphic novel, the protagonist has spent his entire life secluded in a lighthouse. He amuses himself by randomly pointing to a word in his dictionary, then imaging a scene around that word. Sometimes the dictionary definition isn‘t enough for him to clearly envision the object. It‘s funny and sad at the same time.

Lindy @Milara Ha! Thanks for this story. 😊 3y
