3⭐️ It was okay; it felt a bit too convoluted at times. #2024 #fiction #booksaboutbooks #translation #contemporary

The Heart of a Dog | Mikhail Bulgakov
Pickpick

The premise of this short novel is quirky and disturbing whilst raising some philosophical concerns on humanity, science and politics. There are subtleties here I think I missed because I don‘t know enough about the Russian Revolution and after. For now, I am left with the impression this is a very brave novel to write.

Proverb #3: A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush.
The equivalents given by the book are in the picture, but I found more: https://shorturl.at/gyOS9

Some interesting differences show up when we look at how the same sentence is said in different languages: would you translate these keeping them as close to the original as possible or would you change them to fit the rules of the target language?

Ada's Room: A Novel | Sharon Dodua Otoo
post image
Pickpick

The unusual structure of this novel is part of its appeal: Ada is reborn several times across 7 centuries & a spirit being who takes the form of objects—a broom, a passport—narrates. The disorienting shifts in perspective add texture to the themes of power structures, racism & and search for home. The final Ada, in 2019 Berlin, is such a great character, showing how layers of history affect the present. #audiobook #translation

Elsa, a 9-year-old Sámi girl, is witness to her reindeer‘s murder. The murderer threatens to kill her too if she says anything. The animals continue to be tortured and killed. The Swedish police do nothing. A gripping tale that spans decades in Elsa‘s life, portraying the joys and challenges of contemporary Indigenous life in northern Sweden. #Translation by Rachel Willson Broyles

TrishB I can read serial killer books, but animals being murdered, nope. 11mo
Lindy @TrishB Not just murdered, tortured. That aspect is hard to take, but so is the discrimination against Sámi people and the callous indifference of the police and townspeople. 11mo
TrishB That sounds terrible too 😞 11mo
SamAnne I‘ve been trying to get to this o e ever since I read the NYT review last January! 11mo
Lindy @SamAnne once I started reading, I didn‘t want to put it down (ignoring my concurrent reads) 11mo

Essays Two | Lydia Davis
post image
Pickpick

Davis is a translator and writer. This book contains essays which are a sort of journal of her translation process. She has translated Flaubert and Proust, and the essays discuss how she makes choices and solves problems. She also records her adventures in teaching herself Norwegian by reading a difficult novel without any resources.
I found it fascinating, but then I think I am a frustrated translator.

Playful feminist retellings of traditional Japanese folktales; these loosely interconnected short stories set in contemporary Japan feature ghosts and other supernatural beings going about their daily business and interacting with the living. Each story has corresponding notes at the back about the source material. A delight from beginning to end. #Translation by Polly Barton.
