Black Ice
Black Ice | Lorene Cary
2 posts | 4 read | 2 to read
In 1972 Lorene Cary, a bright, ambitious black teenager from Philadelphia, was transplanted into the formerly all-white, all-male environs of the elite St. Paul's School in New Hampshire, where she became a scholarship student in a "boot camp" for future American leaders. Like any good student, she was determined to succeed. But Cary was also determined to succeed without selling out. This wonderfully frank and perceptive memoir describes the perils and ambiguities of that double role, in which failing calculus and winning a student election could both be interpreted as betrayals of one's skin. Black Ice is also a universally recognizable document of a woman's adolescence; it is, as Houston Baker says, "a journey into selfhood that resonates with sober reflection, intellignet passion, and joyous love." From the Trade Paperback edition.

House moves, hurricanes, book sales -- nothing has separated me from this 1991 edition. I entered it into the search box, not expecting it to be listed. When I saw the reprint cover, I just had to unshelve and redress this first edition for photographing. The bookmark opened to the following quote. (See comment below.)

Donna_sBookMinute " 'I have the feeling, Libby, that you've never failed anything before, and you think that makes you who you are. It doesn't.' 'Fix your face.' That's what my mother said after a spanking. ... I fixed my face. I had gone to Miss Deane for hope. She'd given me a cannon blast of real life instead. I had not wanted to know what I now knew. She had treated me like a young adult, though. ... She had talked to me as though I could take it.." 8y

@ReadingOver50 -- I found the feature. If you scroll to the bottom of your search results list, click this area; and it will open a page for you to enter a title you'd like to have added. I haven't used it yet. But I came across it. This book is an old title I didn't expect to be in the database. Hope this helps.

scripturient Ooooh! Thanks for pointing this out! I was wondering if there was anywhere we could suggest titles. 8y
Donna_sBookMinute @scripturient -- you're most welcome. I've just been shaking my phone to contact @Litsy in order to request that a title be added. Then I recently happened across this new update. 8y
