Jackie as Editor
Jackie as Editor: The Literary Life of Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis | Greg Lawrence
6 posts | 1 read | 10 to read
An absorbing chronicle of a much overlooked chapter in Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis's lifeher nineteen-year editorial career History remembers Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis as the consummate first lady, the nation's tragic widow, the millionaire's wife, and, of course, the quintessential embodiment of elegance. Her biographers, however, skip over an equally important stage in her life: her nearly twenty year long career as a book editor. Jackie as Editor is the first book to focus exclusively on this remarkable woman's editorial career. At the age of forty-six, one of the most famous women in the world went to work for the first time in twenty-two years. Greg Lawrence, who had three of his books edited by Jackie, draws from interviews with more than 125 of her former collaborators and acquaintances in the publishing world to examine one of the twentieth century's most enduring subjects of fascination through a new angle: her previously untouted skill in the career she chose. Over the last third of her life, Jackie would master a new industry, weather a very public professional scandal, and shepherd more than a hundred books through the increasingly corporate halls of Viking and Doubleday, publishing authors as diverse as Diana Vreeland, Louis Auchincloss, George Plimpton, Bill Moyers, Dorothy West, Naguib Mahfouz, and even Michael Jackson. Jackie as Editor gives intimate new insights into the life of a complex and enigmatic woman who found fulfillment through her creative career during book publishing's legendary Golden Age, and, away from the public eye, quietly defined life on her own terms.

This fun 2019 Goodreads reading stat had me looking back to the publishing dates of both books, and I‘m compelled to give Jackie another shout out. Although it was published in 2011, I read it this year and rated it an A with 4.75 stars. It‘s an interesting read - imagine Jackie O as your editor! ... Did y‘all find interest in your stat like this?

marleed I‘ve only read 4 out of 239 books in 2019 in which I‘ve given less than a 3 Stars, meh, C rating. Were any of those 4 my least popular? Nooooo. 4y
Scochrane26 My least popular is one by a local writer. Not that many people know about it. Think I gave it a 3 star rating. 4y
marleed @Scochrane26 Maybe in 2020 I‘ll try to guess what my most unread book will be. Now I‘m curious what the reading count of JaE was in 2011. And boy E&P sure have staying power as that published in 2013! I find it particularly interesting since this year I concentrated on newly published books and none of those were more read than E&P! 4y

Scochrane26 I‘m sure E&P has stayed popular because Rainbow Rowell has become a more well-known author since then. There‘s always new youth finding books. 4y
Scochrane26 My most popular is HP sorcerer‘s stone. Highest rated is HP 3. I had looked earlier because I thought She Said might be the highest rated. 4y
marleed @Scochrane26 I gave She Said my 5* rating because it‘s such an important book. I read as a library loan and decided I must purchase anew in support of research journalists. 4y
Scochrane26 I just finished it & also gave it 5 stars. It‘s average in GR is 4.45, which is really high for GR. PoA average is 4.56. 4y

Pickpick

I was captivated by this piece of non-fiction! I recommend it from 3 perspectives: 1. as intriguing stories from authors, publishers, and editors whose lives were touched by Jackie O, the editor; 2. a fascinating look at 19 years in the publishing industry; or 3. a piece of history 1975-1994. If you are interested in Mrs O or the publishing world you won‘t regret giving this book a try.

cathipink This sounds like an interesting book + I'd love an inside look at publishing 🙂 5y
marleed @cathipink I wasn‘t expecting to be pulled into the publishing world in such a way. I think about editing so often in books particularly when they are Meh reads for me. This lesson on editing was right up my aisle of interest. (edited) 5y
BooknerdsLife Never heard of this book but sounds very interesting 😍 Have to stack it! 🙌🏼📚 5y
