I saw this book at Powell's and was intrigued after rifling through a few pages. It's a great library pick, or a fun book for a teacher's library, or a quick smile gift 🙂 some of the summaries were like daggers, some made me laugh, some were fine. Some books chosen made me 🙃 (The DaVinci Code isn't a classic). It was not hard to notice, in such a condensed setting, how male-centric (and female-hating) many classics are.

Tamra It‘s such a fun book! I wish there was a volume 2. 4y
cathipink @Tamra there definitely could be a volume 2. So many books, so little time 🙂 4y
Nute Is that the entire summary of War and Peace on the book cover? lmbo So sad about the observation.🙁 4y
cathipink @Nute yes! 🙂 every book inside is distilled to one or two sentences. It's a fun, very quick read. 4y

One of my neighbors has this side door and I always imagine Kinsey living here 🙂 read this series when my kids were little during naptime, often getting the large print editions from the library for easier knitting while reading. Think I'm due for a reread. Hard to believe the alphabet will never be finished 💔

Ruthiella I always enjoy the description of Kinsey‘s tiny apartments. She is so utilitarian.😀 4y
cathipink @Ruthiella me too 🙂 I started making (what I imagine the recipe to be) her warm hard boiled egg sandwiches too. A family fave 🙂 4y

The Testaments: A Novel | Margaret Atwood

Mehso-so

I'm struggling to give this even a so-so. I find the graphic design of the covers to be more creative than the plot 😑 Disappointed with the obviousness of it all, and kept hoping for a greater message or lesson as I read on. The last 12 pages were my favorite - would be interested to know more about the time gap than the bulk of the book.

cherinium It's nice to see someone else who was not all that impressed. I also rated it a So-So. To sum it up, the story felt forced, like Atwood was trying to live up to the hype of the series. 4y
cathipink @cherinium my expectations were high, given it's Atwood and the story is so iconic. I'm ok with a plot driven book, but I think there were missed opportunities (comparing people who only knew Gilead vs those who witnessed the transformation). I'm glad I read it bc I was curious about the book, but it was fairly forgettable. 4y
Prairiegirl_reading Before I read it I kept thinking it‘s not fair to compare it to The Handmaid‘s Tale because of the time that has passed. I‘m not going to compare it to that. On its own it just isn‘t that interesting and definitely felt forced. I totally agree with you. 4y

Finished my 100th book of the year last night 🎉 this book was much different than I expected, but I enjoyed it and it's given me a lot to think about. New Orleans is the city of my heart, and Katrina remains the event of my lifetime that never fails to render me speechless. This memoir is and isn't about the storm, and is and isn't about NOLA. Grateful to have read this story, and pulling for her and Tressie on 11/20 🤞 reading stats below ⬇️

cathipink Out of the 100 books read 📚 21 were from my stacks (the rest, library)🧔 15 male-identifying authors 📘 29 authors of color (better than last year but still need to do better)🎧 40 audiobooks 4y
merelybookish Good work! I stacked this a while ago and glad to see it's living up the it's hype! 4y
cathipink @merelybookish it's my most productive reading year by *a lot* - glad to have made it to 100 but aiming for fewer next year. I hope you enjoy The Yellow House when you get to it 🙂 4y

Friends! I put this book on hold on January 30, and now it's mine 🎉🎉🎉🎉 (for 21 days, at least). I think library holds may be the only part of my life in which I have any patience at all.

This is a reread- read over winter break of my freshman year of high school (shizz, almost 30 years ago now)- the beginning of falling in love with some of the classics 💗

This book ripped me in two. I think it's a book best experienced, so I don't want to say too much, but Jacqueline Woodson is an incredible writer and so seamlessly puts you in the story and the narrators' heads. Do read this one.

Also - Roxane Gay talked about this one (spoiler free) for her Vice book club, available on YouTube- it's worth a watch.

Cinfhen Just got the book this week! You‘re review makes me want to bump it up!! 4y

I'm not an ardent fall lover (summer forever, please), but the fact that the Book Riot podcast is doing two episodes per week for fall has me embracing the season wholeheartedly.

I 💗 love💗 this podcast (it might be my favorite) because I love hearing Jeff and Rebecca talk about book world news (it isn't book reviews or TBR fluffing at all - even this episode). Highly recommend.

Cortg I agree! Pleeeeaaaaaase don't go, summer! 🌞 5y
LauraBeth I love the BR podcast and LOVE their fall previews! Even the husband, who claims to hate all of my podcasts, will specifically request the BR podcast when we‘re getting ready to drift off to sleep. He hates books and couldn‘t care less about publishing but he likes Rebecca‘s enthusiasm and Jeff‘s insider baseball. He also thinks Jeff interrupts her too much 😹 5y
Susannah @LauraBeth I agree with your husband. I also think Jeff uses the phrase “confirmation bias” too much. 😁 5y

cathipink @Cortg I am noticing the darkness in the morning and evening already 😶 at least the weather has stayed warm in Denver. Is it still warm where you are? 5y
cathipink @LauraBeth @Susannah I agree about the interrupting. I feel like they make a relatively complementary pair when I listen, but it feel strange when Jeff is constantly talking about how little he reads 🤷‍♀️ (I know the book business isn't about reading per se, it just feels weird). 5y
Susannah That‘s interesting,@cathipink. You would think that reading would drive his interest in the book business, though. 5y

This book 😍😍😍 I am typically an avoider of short stories but this book has been recommended so many times that I couldn't resist. I am so glad I read it - I didn't realize how deeply comforting it would be to read a set of stories largely set in Denver, with accurate setting references. More importantly, the stories within are beautifully told, with characters too often neglected in narrative. Read this book.

Anyone know of a source for the books offered (apart from endless scrolling on the B&N site)? I went last summer but only picked up Circe. Trying to cool my jets with book purchases and have mostly bought used this summer, but 50% off is pretty tempting 🙂

Ruthiella I would call your local B&N for the skinny. I think when and what is offered at 50% may vary. 5y
cathipink @Ruthiella oh interesting! I didn't realize it would be different from store to store. 5y
Ruthiella I don‘t think it‘s all the books in the store. Just select titles. 5y
See All 8 Comments
cathipink @Ruthiella right... I just thought the books included in the sale would be the same across all stores since the offer is good online as well. 5y
Sweetkokoro I think it only differs from store to store because each store carries a variety of books and not the same set of books. The two I go carry such a drastic difference of Sci-fi/fantasy so I always make sure to check them both out. 5y
cathipink @Sweetkokoro that makes sense 🙂 thanks 🙂 5y
LibrarianRyan Apparently they are not releasing lists on line early like they did last year. They had stuff on line that was showing up as part of the 50% sale but not not inthe store. They gave it to me anyway, but ... 5y

This book didn't live up to the promise it had in my head - I wish it had been a little sharper. While I acknowledge that there aren't any known surrogate residential centers, would anyone be surprised to hear that one is operating right now in secret? I enjoyed hearing Jane and Reagan's stories, but felt like the author did them both a little dirty in the end.

The_Real_Nani Same. It seemed to strive for depth but missed the mark. 5y
cathipink @The_Real_Nani I think the 'set in the not-so-distant future' classification had me primed for a more dystopian take? The one part that did land for me was Mae's observance of how catering to rich people will never be automated, and her falling into that same audience as well - nevermind that the employees are treated like machines. 5y
FeministBookClub I chatted with the author about the premise on our podcast. I think you‘d be interested in her perspective! 5y
The_Real_Nani @cathipink It was being compared to The Handmaids Tale. Maybe in context but in writing quality? Nope. 5y
The_Real_Nani Also I agree about rich ppl and automation 100% 5y

Help me, Littens - I think maybe I don't like sci fi? I finished Recursion this morning and it was fine (I'll put my reason in a spoiler-protected comment below). My only other sci fi read of the year was Golden State, whose ending made me plain mad. I've seen plenty of sci fi movies, all of which I would place in the fine category.

Is there a great sci fi book I need to try? I don't like dismissing a genre outright, but feeling disheartened.

cathipink I'm so done with the Inside Out (the movie) ending (which is also from The Prophet by Gibran) - happiness can only be fully felt thanks to its counter, sadness. The ending just felt a little too pat for me. The story was fine, and I'm sure the science was sound, but one of my main complaints with sci fi generally is throwing in a lot of science that I'm skeptical most people understand (me included) to seem intellectual. 😬 5y
glitterkitty459 This is of my favs (1st in a series) 5y
Reviewsbylola I‘m not huge into sci fi. Like, at all. I love how Crouch turns his into thrillers tho. I don‘t get a lot of the science-y stuff and I‘m ok with that. I‘d say if you want to give him another try, check out his Wayward Pines series. 5y

I've declared this a paperback summer (apart from my library holds over which I have no control). Took this to the beach and enjoyed it. I read this a looooong time ago (saw the movie, too, but have little memory of it- looks like the two are fairly different). Towards the end, the book felt a little too quippy/clever (one liner after one liner), but they're all very good, and such a great first novel. Great light read.
