This author is well-known and much loved in these parts…but sadly not by me. Having read one other book by her, I wouldn‘t have ever read another except this is a book club pick. I gave it a so-so because I did finish it (with a lot of eye rolling) and some bits weren‘t awful. Emmeline and her talking (!) dog Vera unspool the story of her life from her birth in 1894 until her death in 1969. People just don‘t talk this way. 😬

𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐒𝐩𝐨𝐨𝐧 𝐒𝐭𝐞𝐚𝐥𝐞𝐫 by 𝐋𝐞𝐬𝐥𝐞𝐲 𝐂𝐫𝐞𝐰𝐞 is an emotional tale of difficult topics (war, mental illness, suicide, fractured family relationships, & the search for a place to belong in the world). It's also a charming story populated by eclectic, frequently hilarious characters, sprinkled with a touch of magical realism. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

It's already Day 6 of the 𝐓𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐦 𝐂𝐨𝐥𝐥𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐆𝐥𝐨𝐛𝐚𝐥 𝐑𝐞𝐚𝐝𝐚𝐥𝐨𝐧𝐠 of 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐒𝐩𝐨𝐨𝐧 𝐒𝐭𝐞𝐚𝐥𝐞𝐫 by 𝐋𝐞𝐬𝐥𝐞𝐲 𝐂𝐫𝐞𝐰𝐞. I'm spending a quiet day at home, sipping coffee, enjoying the sunshine streaming in my windows, & catching up on a captivating & delightful story, populated with fascinating characters that tackles some extremely sensitive topics. I find myself highlighting many particularly poignant passages.

The 𝐓𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐦 𝐂𝐨𝐥𝐥𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐆𝐥𝐨𝐛𝐚𝐥 𝐑𝐞𝐚𝐝𝐚𝐥𝐨𝐧𝐠 of 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐒𝐩𝐨𝐨𝐧 𝐒𝐭𝐞𝐚𝐥𝐞𝐫 by 𝐋𝐞𝐬𝐥𝐞𝐲 𝐂𝐫𝐞𝐰𝐞 is starting soon. It's my first readalong & I'm looking forward to discussing the book with a wonderful group of readers. I'll be snuggling into my comfy chair to read the first 4 chapters.

The blurb on the front cover from Amy Spurway (another Canadian author) says this book just may steal your heart. Did it ever! Something so wonderful to read when the news in the last weeks has brought nothing but despair this was something special to read. Loved it. 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟

Switched to reading this one because I needed something with heart and humour. It‘s also our book club book for July. It‘s a delight already!

I always like exploring new (to me) Canadian authors. Born in Nova Scotia, running to be with a brother gassed in France during WWI, Emmeline Darling is a big character. I enjoyed this in spots. I found it uneven in terms of plot and overly sentimental. In three weeks I am moving to Nova Scotia and so many of the scenic descriptions were fun to read. Not sure I would read another of her books. 2/5
