Lying in State
Lying in State: Why Presidents Lie -- And Why Trump Is Worse | Eric Alterman
22 posts | 2 read | 6 to read
This definitive history of presidential lying reveals how our standards for truthfulness have eroded -- and why Trump's lies are especially dangerous. If there's one thing we know about Donald Trump, it's that he lies. But he's by no means the first president to do so. In Lying in State, Eric Alterman asks how we ended up with such a pathologically dishonest commander in chief, showing that, from early on, the United States has persistently expanded its power and hegemony on the basis of presidential lies. He also reveals the cumulative effect of this deception-each lie a president tells makes it more acceptable for subsequent presidents to lie-and the media's complicity in spreading misinformation. Donald Trump, then, represents not an aberration but the culmination of an age-old trend. Full of vivid historical examples and trenchant analysis, Lying in State is essential reading for anyone seeking to understand how we arrived in this age of alternative facts.

Individual chapters on all presidents, Franklin Roosevelt to Trump .It covers necessary lies to lies for self benefit.Well written & sharp , it informs all of us that we should get news from multiple sources & dig deeper if we have any doubts.Defending democracy may depend on it.

arubabookwoman I read Why Presidents Lie by Alterman back when Bush was president. I guess this is the updated version. Things were bad then, but oh so much worse now. 3y

Trump blew hot and cold on his trade war with China, but at the same time his businesses benefited from the Chinese government granting his companies thirty-nine trademarks after he became president, after having specifically rejected granting the trademarks in the past. The president's daughter, Ivanka Trump, was granted at least seven more.

Susanita Meanwhile, I have to jump through hoops to spend a lousy $500 on the government purchase card, but by all means keep draining that swamp. 4y

It's amazing how the National Embarrassment always does something atrocious, but then eventually admits to it because he can't resist letting us know how "clever" he is for doing it.

Apparently, Clinton's affair with Monica Lewinsky was on par with the Holocaust.

"If everybody always lies to you, the consequence is not that you believe the lies, but rather that nobody believes anything any longer...And a people that can no longer believe anything can no longer make up its mind. It is deprived not only of its capacity to act, but also of its capacity to think and to judge. And with such a people you can then do whatever you please." --Hannah Arendt
