Sketch-Book of Geoffrey Crayon, Gent
Sketch-Book of Geoffrey Crayon, Gent | Washington Irving
4 posts | 6 read | 2 to read
In The Sketch-Book (1820-21), Irving explores the uneasy relationship of an American writer to English literary traditions. In two sketches, he experiments with tales transplanted from Europe, thereby creating the first classic American short stories, Rip Van Winkle, and The Legend of Sleepy Hollow. Based on Irving's final revision of his most popular work, this new edition includes comprehensive explanatory notes of The Sketch-Book's sources for the modern reader. About the Series: For over 100 years Oxford World's Classics has made available the broadest spectrum of literature from around the globe. Each affordable volume reflects Oxford's commitment to scholarship, providing the most accurate text plus a wealth of other valuable features, including expert introductions by leading authorities, voluminous notes to clarify the text, up-to-date bibliographies for further study, and much more.

Once you adjust to Irving's somewhat florid style, his sketches feel like a warm slice of post-Revolution America, even when (re-)telling colonial folk tales of the newly established country. To be sure, melodrama weaves its way into the Sketch-Book but doesn't veer into melancholy. There is a unity as the work flits between the colonies and England, and the story of poor Ichabod Crane still gave me a bit of a chill. #bookreviewer #classics

In the dark shadow of the grove...he beheld something huge, misshapen, black and towering. It stirred not, but seemed gathered up in the gloom, like some gigantic monster ready to spring upon the traveler. The hair...rose upon his head with terror. What was to be done? To turn and fly now was too late...Summoning up, therefore, a show of course, he demanded in stammering accents-"Who are you?" #classics
