Once you adjust to Irving's somewhat florid style, his sketches feel like a warm slice of post-Revolution America, even when (re-)telling colonial folk tales of the newly established country. To be sure, melodrama weaves its way into the Sketch-Book but doesn't veer into melancholy. There is a unity as the work flits between the colonies and England, and the story of poor Ichabod Crane still gave me a bit of a chill. #bookreviewer #classics
