It takes a while to address what the child is dealing with (stuttering), which may create opportunity for many children dealing with different speech things to find a connection with the text. The art and poetry in this book are beautiful. #PictureBook #DisabilitiesRep

In this autobiographical story, Scott portrays a young boy who has a “bad speech day” at school. His dad‘s advice helps him find ways to rethink his bad speech days. A great story that teaches acceptance. #PictureBook Letter I #BBRc

robinb Jess, I‘m debating giving this one as a gift to a friend. She is a retired deaf teacher and something about this book‘s description spoke to me. As someone who has read it, what do you think? 2y
Librarybelle @robinb I think that would make a wonderful gift! The author is a poet, and you can tell from the writing that he carries that style over to the pages. And, since it‘s based on personal experience, so much of this rings true. Definitely a great gift choice! 2y
robinb @Librarybelle Thanks! 😘 Yes, I liked the aspect of his personal experience. I think this is one she‘d like. 2y

I Talk Like a River by Jordan Scott and illustrated by Sydney Smith

Schneider Family Book Award

There is a poetic quality to this writing that pulls at your heart strings and emphasizes themes of fitting in. A young boy discovers how his speech (and stutter) is a sometimes tumultuous or serene river.

ToddSalerno The book's use of metaphors is strong and would be an excellent teaching tool for that literary device. (UDL 2.2-Clarify syntax and structure.) (ESOL 11- Place language in meaningful context.)

Nrossi This book seems like a really interesting read and one that I‘d definitely like to have in my classroom one day. I also think the attached site would be a really good activity for kids to do to work on their skills! 3y
Sdemps From the provided summery this seems like book with a lot of symbolism and metaphors. Students could get an understanding of many different literary elements with this story. 3y
DrSpalding Your posts are concise and to the point. Knowing that our current president grew up with and has overcome a stutter, this book could be connected to the real world. 3y

Such a beautiful read. I hope to live long enough to see the day when people with differences are treated equally by their peers. We have made a lot of progress already in my lifetime. #kindnessmatters

A poet‘s reflections (see what I did there?) on how his father would take him to the river when he had a “bad speech day” and tell him: “You see how that water moves, son? That‘s how you speak.”
And then he would watch the water bubbling, churning, whirling, and crashing. His father took him to the river so he would feel less alone, so he would connect his way of speaking with the natural world.
This is a beautiful book.
