The Beauty of What Remains
The Beauty of What Remains: How Our Greatest Fear Becomes Our Greatest Gift | Steve Leder
2 posts | 2 read | 1 to read
From the author of the bestselling More Beautiful Than Before comes an inspiring book about loss based on his most popular sermon. As the senior rabbi of one of the largest synagogues in the world, Steve Leder has learned over and over again the many ways death teaches us how to live and love more deeply by showing us not only what is gone but also the beauty of what remains. This inspiring and comforting book takes us on a journey through the experience of loss that is fundamental to everyone. Yet even after having sat beside thousands of deathbeds, Steve Leder the rabbi was not fully prepared for the loss of his own father. It was only then that Steve Leder the son truly learned how loss makes life beautiful by giving it meaning and touching us with love that we had not felt before. Enriched by Rabbi Leder's irreverence, vulnerability, and wicked sense of humor, this heartfelt narrative is filled with laughter and tears, the wisdom of millennia and modernity, and, most of all, an unfolding of the profound and simple truth that in loss we gain more than we ever imagined.

I found the book comforting. I enjoyed Leder‘s style, how he wove personal experiences into sage advice and wisdom.

Bailedbailed

A friend recommended this to me a little over a year ago, after the passing of my mother. I put it on hold at the library, but once it became available, I didn't feel I was ready to engage with the content yet, so I postponed my hold until recently. I was expecting it to deal primarily with loss, with walking through the time after the death of a loved one. But instead, the early chapters have an extended focus on preparing for death. ⤵️

BarbaraJean Much of the content was not new to me, and because I didn't have an extended time to prepare for my mother's death, I felt regret rather than finding comfort or assistance or a new perspective. I skimmed through some of the later chapters & didn't really connect with those, either. I don't think it's just timing—I think it's just not the book for me. I don‘t usually bail on books, but I felt relief at putting this one down—so bail it is! 1y
Tea_and_Starstuff Well done for you for putting it down! Sounds like exactly the right call. 1y
