Goth Girls of Banff
Goth Girls of Banff | John O'Neill
4 posts | 1 read | 1 to read
John O'Neill's gothic short stories, set in the Canadian Rockies, are haunted by the violence inherent in nature and humans. The mountains are majestic and impassive. The characters are surprising, bent, but also empathetic. Their survival is tenuous. A two-sister team of goth tour guides offers guided excursions up switchback mountain trails; a paroled convict thumbs his way into the life of a family driving west; and an animal pathologist, while performing a necropsy on a grizzly bear, has an unusual encounter with both technology and humanity. Goth Girls of Banff is a superb collection, sharply written, with plot turns as consequence-laden as those on an iced-over mountain road.

The silver candelabra was on the floor, all the candles spilled out like trees from a mini clear-cut, and scattered among them were beer caps like tiny buzz saw blades.

Pickpick

A collection of stories about memorable misfits—alcoholic, socially awkward, or embittered by life—these are easily people I can imagine encountering in real life. Well, except for Marilyn Monroe. Not all of the stories are equally strong but they all have some great lines. (“he needs to exercise his annoyance, take it for a walk”) The title story is my fave, with its pair of sisters monetizing their defiant personal style. #CanLit

“We never went to plays, or operas, or museums, or galleries. ‘Too immediate,‘ she said. ‘Too right there.‘”

Quote from tagged book. I feel the opposite & I‘ve missed live theatre SO much during the pandemic. Looking forward to attending a play next month, in person, masked & socially distanced.

AnneCecilie Me too. Can‘t wait to visit the theatre and the movies again 3y

Centique I miss theatre too. I had tickets to Wicked next week but we‘re in lockdown so it‘s been postponed. Will make it even more special when I finally get there! 3y
Lindy @Centique Indeed. Best wishes during your current lockdown. 🤗 3y

She hoped to get some rest here. Both men and women go silent at her appearance, glum, dumbstruck, wanting to equal her fame with something said, to touch her, somehow, in order to touch themselves; their expectation like a grizzly in the river, scooping out its own reflection, or maybe the long turquoise claws of the northern lights.
