A collection of stories about memorable misfits—alcoholic, socially awkward, or embittered by life—these are easily people I can imagine encountering in real life. Well, except for Marilyn Monroe. Not all of the stories are equally strong but they all have some great lines. (“he needs to exercise his annoyance, take it for a walk”) The title story is my fave, with its pair of sisters monetizing their defiant personal style. #CanLit

Both men and women go silent at her appearance, glum, dumbstruck, wanting to equal her fame with something said, to touch her, somehow, in order to touch themselves; their expectation like a grizzly in the river, scooping out its own reflection, or maybe the long turquoise claws of the northern lights.
