Raconteur's Commonplace Book: A Greenglass House Story
Raconteur's Commonplace Book: A Greenglass House Story | Kate Milford
4 posts | 5 read | 2 to read
Nothing is what it seems and there's always more than one side to the story as a group of strangers trapped in an inn slowly reveal their secrets in this new standalone mystery set in the world of the best-selling Greenglass House, from a National Book Award nominee and Edgar Award-winning author. The rain hasn't stopped for a week, and the twelve guests of the Blue Vein Tavern are trapped by flooded roads and the rising Skidwrack River. Among them are a ship's captain, tattooed twins, a musician, and a young girl traveling on her own. To pass the time, they begin to tell stories--each a different type of folklore--that eventually reveal more about their own secrets than they intended. As the rain continues to pour down--an uncanny, unnatural amount of rain--the guests begin to realize that the entire city is in danger, and not just from the flood. But they have only their stories, and one another, to save them. Will it be enough?

I love Greenglass House books. The only one I haven‘t adored was Bluecrowne, and after reading the tagged I need to revisit it because I don‘t think I did it justice first time through. This book pulls in so much from all the previous books, I‘m just impressed with Milford‘s ability to keep so many threads in play. I already want to reread this one to see what I missed the first time. Also, the illustrations are gorgeous!

She had a three-headed donkey, and its name was Fred-Morty-Tucker, same as my brothers, who, come to think of it, are not unlike a three-headed jackass themselves.

😆

Butterfinger That is funny. 4y

Today‘s #bookhaul - I went into a bookstore and only bought the one book I went in to buy! This has only happened a handful of tines in my entire life.

To celebrate, I went to Baskin-Robbins (fastest in-and-out ever) to get a quart of ice cream for the kiddo and a cone for myself. I forgot the February flavor of the month is one of my favorites, so I‘m happy to have gotten it in before it left.

Did grocery pickup, too, but that wasn‘t as fun.

Kate Milford‘s Nagspeake/Green Glass House series has been one of my favorites for the last few years. She has built a vibrant, mysterious, and wholly unique world in which her characters move in seemingly disconnected paths and times. This one is full of the backstories mentioned in some of the earlier books. A little dense, but good just the same. More at https://itsallaboutthebook.org/

AlaMich I just googled this series and now I think I have to buy all of them for the covers alone! 4y
mandarchy How did I not know that it was a series. I loved the first book. 4y
PatriciaU @mandarchy I have been so sucked in to this series that I keep researching elements from the stories to see if they are real! My favorite of all the books is Ghosts of Green Glass House, mostly because of the concept of the Raw Nights performers, a troupe of “actors” who travel around performing and telling stories during the “raw nights” before Christmas when magic is wild. 4y
