Thief of Souls: An Inspector Lu Fei Mystery | Brian Klingborg
4 posts | 3 read | 3 to read
In Brian Klingborg's Thief of Souls, the brutal murder of a young woman in a rural village in Northern China sends shockwaves all the way to Beijingbut seemingly only Inspector Lu Fei, living in exile in the small town, is interested in justice for the victim. Lu Fei is a graduate of Chinas top police college but hes been assigned to a sleepy backwater town in northern China, where almost nothing happens and the theft of a few chickens represents a major crime wave. That is until a young woman is found dead, her organs removed, and joss paper stuffed in her mouth. The CID in Beijingheaded by a rising political staris on the case but in an increasingly authoritarian China, prosperity and political stability are far more important than solving the murder of an insignificant village girl. As such, the CID head is interested in pinning the crime on the first available suspect rather than wading into uncomfortable truths, leaving Lu Fei on his own. As Lu digs deeper into the gruesome murder, he finds himself facing old enemies and creating new ones in the form of local Communist Party bosses and corrupt business interests. Despite these rising obstacles, Lu remains determined to find the real killer, especially after he links the murder to other unsolved homicides. But the closer he gets to the heart of the mystery, the more he puts himself and his loved ones in danger.

Pickpick

A quick and rather straightforward #SerialKillerThriller set in a northern and rather remote Chinese town. I appreciated the society comments and differences in how the Party, the legal system and police force operates more than the actual mystery itself (though I suppose it is rather satisfying to be proven right on identifying the killer!). The romance makes feel like the start of a series and I would be interested in seeing what‘s next!

Mehso-so

This was just a meh for me. Involves the brutal murder of a young woman in a small rural village in northern China. Inspector Lu was OK as the man on the job, but I felt as if I was watching this from outside the story, no real connection. The writing was a bit stilted to me, lots of poems/quotes added at various times breaking up the narrative, and while interesting, a lot of wandering off about Chinese history/customs, etc. I🔻

robinb had guessed the villain fairly early on. There‘s also some descriptive scenes of murder(s) for those who might be squeamish. I do think this could be better with more editing. 3/5⭐️ NOTE: This appears to be the first in a series. Hoping for better things ahead. (edited) 4y

My #readingasia2021 pick for #china thanks to an invitation from Minotaur Books to read this via NetGalley, Thief of Souls is disappointing. It‘s an okay procedural, but clearly written by a white guy. He spends too much time explaining the justice system in China, the pacing is all over the place, and the big, cinematic ending falls flat because I figured out the killer long before the detective did. 7 hrs for #20in4

DGRachel The more I think about it, the less I like it. The resolution is so cliché, that I can‘t help but roll my eyes. A so-so is generous. I can only assume the nightmare I had from it was triggered by stress and not the book. 4y

Librarybelle Great review! It sounds like such a let down. 4y
DGRachel @BarbaraBB @Librarybelle It might not have bothered me so much if I hadn‘t just read a thriller in translation that felt truer to the setting and the people. You-Jeong Jeong didn‘t have to explain things for a Western audience, because we weren‘t the focal group and that was a pleasure to read. 4y

Apparently this is scarier that I realized. I literally had nightmares last night thanks to this and I‘m not even enjoying it all that much. 😔 I honestly can‘t remember the last time book invaded my dreams like that. Review to come when I finish it. #netgalley

Megabooks Wow...I‘m sorry. 4y
Tattooedteacher Wow I‘m intrigued. 4y
Reggie Books that bring nightmares..... #stacked. 4y
DGRachel @Tattooedteacher @Reggie Seriously, it‘s not a great book. I don‘t know understand why it triggered a nightmare. It‘s a police procedural set in China and it‘s annoying because the author spends so much time lecturing on how things work in China instead of telling the d*mn story. But there is a serial killer and the last chapter I read was from his POV and he‘s a psychopath. 4y
