Sarahland: Stories | Sam Cohen

"In SARAHLAND, Sam Cohen brilliantly (and often hilariously) explores the ways in which traditional stories have failed us, giving its cast of Sarahs new origin stories, new ways to love the planet and those inhabiting it, and new possibilities for life itself. In one story, a Jewish college girl named Sarah suffers from passively consenting to a form-life devoted to getting one's "mrs." degree. Yet another reveals a version of Sarah finally finding peace with her favorite local necrophiliac. A Buffy-loving Sarah continues her misguided search for self in a twin-- while probing fan culture. As the collection progresses, Cohen explodes this search for self, insisting that we have more to resist and repair than our own personal narrative. Readers watch as the ever-evolving "Sarah" gets recast: as a biblical trans woman, a lesbian literally growing roots, a being who transcends the earth as we know it. While Cohen presents a world that will clearly someday end, "Sarah" will continue. In each Sarah's refusal to adhere to a single narrative, she might even help build a better home for all of us, a place to live that demands no fixity of self, no plague of consumerism, no bodily compromise, a place called SARAHLAND"--

"It wasn‘t exactly true but with people like Elana you had to sound surer than you were or they‘d see your little gaps of uncertainty and jam their claws in there and twist your brain in the direction they wanted it to be thinking."

"When the moon was empty, Hagar laid Sari out on the bed like a beautiful virgin, in a cream silk robe and squatted over Sari‘s center. The slugs at Hagar‘s own center parted in order to suck on the little pink summer squash between Sari‘s thighs and the muscular cavern Hagar‘s slugs protected swallowed and Sari moaned and Hagar bounced her hips and shouted as if possessed."

"This exorcism is not working. I thought I‘d come to realize something new but all I realize is that I love Tegan. I love my memory of Tegan, or my invention of Tegan, and I hate the new Tegan, the real Tegan, who is probably not even named Tegan anymore, or rather, what Tegan was named before I named them Tegan."

"I sit up in bed and take deep breaths, counting to five on the inhale and seven on the exhale, like if I push out more than I take in then part of what I push out has to be Tegan. This doesn‘t work at all so I open my laptop and order Come To Me candles from a botanica with an Amazon store."

"It took her nearly a quarter of an hour to create a convincing lip shape, even when she tried to stay within the carbon-made lines of her own. The line between lip skin and plain skin, she discovered painting, is less clear than you think."

SARAHLAND is a piercing, wonderfully crafted, queer collection of 10 stories where Cohen brilliantly explores identity, gender and sexuality. Each story contains a protagonist named Sarah and Cohen took such care with each of them. All these stories offered something utterly human and deep. I enjoyed them all! Would love to hear others thoughts on this collection! I suggest seeking out own voices reviews for this one too. #bookreview

Awesome short story collection in which each story has at least one character named Sarah. The story telling is fabulous and often turns a traditional story or topic and turn it on its head a bit. My favorite story was The First Sarah with an intriguing take on the biblical story of Abraham, Sarah and Hagar. #ARC #Edelweiss
