Buses Are a Comin'
Buses Are a Comin': Memoir of a Freedom Rider | Charles Person, Richard Rooker
7 posts | 7 read | 6 to read
A firsthand exploration of the cost of boarding the bus of change to move America forwardwritten by one of the Civil Rights Movement's pioneers. At 18, Charles Person was the youngest of the original Freedom Riders, key figures in the U.S. Civil Rights Movement who left Washington, D.C. by bus in 1961, headed for New Orleans. This purposeful mix of black and white, male and female activistsincluding future Congressman John Lewis, Congress of Racial Equality Director James Farmer, Reverend Benjamin Elton Cox, journalist and pacifist James Peck, and CORE field secretary Genevieve Hughesset out to discover whether America would abide by a Supreme Court decision that ruled segregation unconstitutional in bus depots, waiting areas, restaurants, and restrooms nationwide. Two buses proceeded through Virginia, North and South Carolina, to Georgia where they were greeted by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., and finally to Alabama. There, the Freedom Riders found their answer: No. Southern states would continue to disregard federal law and use violence to enforce racial segregation. One bus was burned to a shell, its riders narrowly escaping; the second, which Charles rode, was set upon by a mob that beat several riders nearly to death. Buses Are a Comin provides a front-row view of the struggle to belong in America, as Charles Person accompanies his colleagues off the bus, into the station, into the mob, and into history to help defeat segregations violent grip on African American lives. It is also a challenge from a teenager of a previous era to the young people of today: become agents of transformation. Stand firm. Create a more just and moral country where students have a voice, youth can make a difference, and everyone belongs.

#2021Book65
In a world where teachers are getting in trouble for attempting to show kids that history isn't all sunshine and rainbows, books like this are even more important than they used to be. Charles Person's first-hand account tells of the abuses he and his fellow riders faced for simply sitting in a bus seat to which they had a legal right.

We must preserve the stories and experiences of the participants in the Civil Rights Movement before they are gone… #FreedomRiders

There are so many names that have becomes synonymous with the fight for equality and civil liberties, Charles Person is definitely not one of them, but his story is just as important. This is a autobiographical story of his early life growing up in the segregated south, and then in his teens becoming involved in the freedom rides that happened across the south in the ‘60‘s. A really fascinating story

Publishes Today!!!! This was an excellent front row seat to one of the most important events of the 20th century. Charles Person simply but powerfully shares his story as a peaceful social activist and his time spent as an original Freedom Rider. I was moved by his experiences and the injustices he and the others encountered. His words of “Do something” are a gentle reminder that nonviolent action is more effective than chaos & destruction.

JennyM Sounds a great book. And your flowers are just beautiful ❤️ 3y
Cinfhen It was really powerful and I wasn‘t expecting to be so moved by his story @JennyM the flowers unfortunately are pretty much dead except for that one rose 😍😉 3y

Charles Person was the youngest member of the 1961 Freedom Ride. He tells about his early life and how, as a Morehouse College freshman, he got involved in the Civil Rights Movement and the Ride. It‘s a relevant read, especially with voter suppression still rampant. But I also found it a bit slow and wish he hadn‘t waited so long to tell what the Ride was like. Still, we must listen.

The first chapter tells of the climax of the trip, but then backs up to tell us about Charles‘ life growing up. In May 1961 for those two weeks that the first Freedom Ride was happening, he was at the tail end of his first year of college. He had previously been involved in some protests in Atlanta with other college students regarding the segregation of blacks and whites in restaurants and cafes. But this was something else.
