The Obama Portraits
The Obama Portraits | Richard Powell, Thelma Golden, Taína Caragol, Dorothy Moss, Kim Sajet
1 post
"This is the first study of the portraits Barack Obama (2018) and Michelle Obama (2018), their reception, and their significance. The book includes essays by historians examining the influence of the paintings and what they reveal about contemporary portraiture, particularly in relation to American and African American history and culture. The book also features interviews with the artists, transcripts of the remarks made by the Obamas at the unveiling, and a selection of images, including behind-the-scenes photography by Pete Souza, the official photographer for the Obamas, made during the portrait sittings"--

Michelle Obama‘s portrait by Amy Sherald. There‘s a good representation of her work as well as an interview/ segment on her in the HBO series Black Art: In the Absence of Light. I bought this book specifically to find out more about Amy. Maybe I can see her work in person some day. â¤ï¸

Bookzombie Such a beautiful piece of art! 3y
Hooked_on_books I don‘t know if she was the artist, but I‘ll never forget the story of the little girl being mesmerized by MO‘s portrait in a museum and having all the doors in the world open up for her when she looked at it. Little black girls deserve to walk any path they choose and watching her respond to that portrait just brought tears to my eyes. (Edit: Just saw your previous post, and yes, she‘s the artist! 😆) (edited) 3y
