Everything Like Before
Everything Like Before: Stories | Kjell Askildsen
2 posts | 1 read | 3 to read
From one of the greatest Norwegian authors of the twentieth century, comes a collection of spare, biting stories of people caught between reality and expectation, hope and despair, love and longing. A man and a woman in a quiet, remote house, an old man on a park bench, an estranged brother in a railway caf -- Kjell Askildsen's characters are surrounded by absence. Filled with disquiet, and longing, they walk to a fjord, they smoke, they drink on a veranda, they listen to conversations that drift through open windows. Small flashes like the promise of a sunhat, a nail in a cherry tree, or a raised flag, reveal the interminable space between desire and reality in which Askildsen's characters are forever suspended. Widely recognized as one of the greatest modern short-story writers, with unadorned prose and a dark humor, Askildsen captures life as it really is, the worlds of his characters uncanny mirrors of our own.

The upside is I supported an Indie bookstore by purchasing this book. The downside it was a disappointing read. I didn‘t even finish the last couple of stories because the themes, settings, and characters are simply variations on one another. I love very short keyhole glimpses onto moments in characters‘ lives, but in this case it was repetitive to the point of boredom. 😒 I‘m keeping the cute store bookmark and donating the book.

KCofKaysville @Tamra Too bad it was a disappointment. I've mostly liked the Scandinavian books I've read so far. 3y
Tamra @KCofKaysville me too so I was really looking forward to it, especially since they are short stories. Oh well..... 3y
Ruthiella Bummer! At least you‘ve got the bookmark to use and enjoy. 😉 3y

My eye was attracted to this beautiful little book and then I read the blurbs. Anything that is described as “spare”, “luminous”, “muted”, “bare”, “minimalist” gets my attention. “Ghost stories in which there are no ghosts”....... people haunted by questions, yes please!

It so happens to coincide with the #Norway read. I‘ve never heard of Askildsen, but apparently he is quite the short story writer. 🤞🏾🤞🏾

Cathythoughts Sounds beautiful, stacked 3y
Tamra @Cathythoughts agreed - I‘m going to read it next! 3y
