Philip Roth: The Biography
Philip Roth: The Biography | Blake Bailey
4 posts | 1 read | 1 to read
Named one of the Most Anticipated Books of 2021 by Oprah Magazine, Chicago Tribune, the Guardian, Literary Hub, The Times (UK), Financial Times, and more. The renowned biographer’s definitive portrait of a literary titan. Appointed by Philip Roth and granted independence and complete access, Blake Bailey spent years poring over Roth’s personal archive, interviewing his friends, lovers, and colleagues, and engaging Roth himself in breathtakingly candid conversations. The result is an indelible portrait of an American master and of the postwar literary scene. Bailey shows how Roth emerged from a lower-middle-class Jewish milieu to achieve the heights of literary fame, how his career was nearly derailed by his catastrophic first marriage, and how he championed the work of dissident novelists behind the Iron Curtain. Bailey examines Roth’s rivalrous friendships with Saul Bellow, John Updike, and William Styron, and reveals the truths of his florid love life, culminating in his almost-twenty-year relationship with actress Claire Bloom, who pilloried Roth in her 1996 memoir, Leaving a Doll’s House. Tracing Roth’s path from realism to farce to metafiction to the tragic masterpieces of the American Trilogy, Bailey explores Roth’s engagement with nearly every aspect of postwar American culture.

During a trip to Israel, in 1984, Roth took his friend David Plante---a gay, gentile writer---to the Orthodox quarter of Jerusalem, Me She'arim, where the two stood on a corner watching Hasidim milling about in their black coats and hats, the boys with their heads shorn except for long side curls.

So I‘m reading this biography, this comes out .Bailey is being accused not only rape but grooming young girl students for sexual exploitation later. Norton not only stopped promoting this book , they took this title and a previous book by Bailey out of print.I‘m going to finish the book because I‘m interested in Roth , will donate some money to an organization that fights to help women. He‘s not convicted but I tend to believe the women. 👇

shortsarahrose I‘ll be interested to hear your take on the book. I haven‘t read it, but I had heard previously that it‘s more than a little forgiving of Roth‘s problematic relationships with women... 3y
Leftcoastzen @shortsarahrose I‘m not too far in , it will be interesting to see.I read Claire Blooms book years ago . 3y

SamAnne I was not planning to read this bio although I‘ve delved into Roth these last few years. I did love Asymmetry by Lisa Halliday, where the male writer character is believed to be based on Roth. I have been following this development! 3y
Simona I have this book also, and I also feel conflicted ... 3y
batsy Been following this horrible story. It's just harrowing to think that abusive people are educators and in positions of power over young people and it can go on for years without others picking up on whether something's just not right https://slate.com/human-interest/2021/04/blake-bailey-former-student-sexual-assa... 3y
Leftcoastzen @batsy thanks for posting this .Read this article & a linked one .horrible.In the bio , I‘m towards the end of Roth‘s first marriage, they both did terrible things to each other & were a bad match .But can‘t help always thinking about Blake‘s lens as I read this book. 3y
