The author is deaf and eventually became a faculty member at Fresno State university where he pushed for American Sign Language to be accepted as fulfilling the core language requirement. This was only in 1990! I had not ever thought of ASL as anything other than a “real language” so this surprises me at how recent it was! Needless to say, this memoir is fascinating as someone who didn‘t know any of this before.
