Had all the "Godfather" vibes but slowly fizzled out.

C for A to Z challenge!

Pickpick

A soft pick, because I love Don Winslow—especially the way he writes dialogue because his characters talk like real people I know. But this book? I felt like I‘d read it already. And already seen the movie. The mafia/mobster trope has been done to death (pardon the pun). Still, it‘s a fast-paced read, and I‘ll likely read the rest of the trilogy when books 2 and 3 come out. Because … Don Winslow. 🤷🏻‍♀️

ChaoticMissAdventures I just started following him on Twitter and he seems like a gem, lots of cheering on other authors. Where would you recommend starting with his books , I have never read him. 2y
Amiable @ChaoticMissAdventures Ooh, I‘d say “The Power of the Dog,” maybe? That‘s the first in another trilogy about the drug wars in Mexico. The second one is “The Cartel,” which I think they made a movie of? And “The King of Cool” is the first in his “Savages” trilogy (he likes writing in threes, apparently! 😀) “Broken“ and “The Force” are excellent reads as well. All are pretty violent —just a heads up. 2y
JHSiess I loved it. Yes, there was some sense of familiarity (we've all read & seen The Godfather, & The Sopranos is my favorite show of all-time and the best show ever in the history of television). Still . . . the characters were so compelling and the twists so brilliant, not to mention the pacing. I flew through those 400 pages and went on to CIty of Dreams. I love Winslow. I'll read anything he writes.

Amiable @JHSiess So funny —I‘ve actually never seen “The Sopranos” (have never had HBO) and I saw “The Godfather” for the first time only last year. (But I did read the book!) 🤷🏻‍♀️ I do love “Goodfellas,” though. 🙂 2y

If you like a tale of Irish and Italian mafia then this is the book for you. A quick read but kind of blah and the ending left room for so much more.

Saknicole Sexy? Or just real mafia business? 2y

Such a good book. About 2 crime families, one Irish and one Italian, and their fight to control a city. I've read a few of Winslow books and this didn't disappoint. This is a first in a trilogy and I am already looking forward to the next one. Really good!!

Sharing a laugh with author Don Winslow after a thought-provoking Q&A session and reading from his new book in Westerly, Rhode Island. This is his final book tour! He‘s retiring to concentrate his efforts on being an advocate and activist for democracy.

EvieBee Nice! Lovely photos too! 3y

Took me a bit to get into this one, but once it flashed back to a mom‘s juicy origin story, I was hooked and ended up loving it. It felt very Don-Winslow-does-The-Sopranos to me, in a good way. He's been an auto-read author for me for a while, esp. bc his books are those rare titles that my sometimes-reader husband and I both enjoy (and that Winslow is a local author for us is a fun bonus). Glad we‘ll have more of this series!

LKK526 @Christine Don Winslow does The Sopranos. Wish I‘d said that👍 3y
Christine @LKK526 Haha, I couldn‘t stop thinking of it that way, including occasionally picturing Sopranos actors in some of the book roles! But I also loved the difference in Northeast setting (and actually have spent a lot of time in Providence, so that part also really drew me in). 3y

Another truly stunning novel by Don Winslow. First in a trilogy, this centers around Italian and Irish crime families who go to war in the 80s. Danny Ryan is a perfect lead character and the tension and action that builds throughout just draws you in. Book 2 doesn't come out until next April, but I am sure it will be worth the wait!

This is an old-fashioned story about two rival mob factions in Rhode Island, the Italians and the Irish. Lots of crosses and double-crosses makes for an exciting read in The Godfather style although not as epic. (Providence, I just read, is the most bookstore-friendly city in the US, followed by my native Hartford). The author‘s style is very easy and while the book is a bit cliched, I enjoyed the story.

EvieBee This sounds great! Is it part of a series or a standalone? 3y
LKK526 @EvieBee I believe it‘s the first of a trilogy. I saw him interviewed and he said he was retiring but had already completed the 2 following books. He‘s written a number of books but came to my attention because of that interview 3y
EvieBee Okay good to know! He‘s an author I wanted to try because a friend recommended a series. Can‘t remember the name but seemed like a Western? But this theme is right up my alley. 3y

LKK526 @EvieBee I think he writes more in the crime genre but I could be wrong. I know other authors cite him as an excellent writer 3y
bthegood Thanks for the review it's on my TBR list - sound good - 3y
LKK526 @bthegood I don‘t think you‘ll be disappointed. It takes place in the ‘80s 3y

Happy publication day to one of my most highly anticipated books of the year. This is the first in a trilogy. Don Winslow is an absolute favorite author of mine. Can't wait to dive into this tonight!

Bklover I haven‘t read him but my son likes him. Which book of his would you read first? 3y
amywithbooks @Bklover you really can't go wrong with any of them. If you want to check out an earlier one, I would go for The Winter of Frankie Machine. And I will always recommend his Cartel trilogy - the first book is The Power of the Dog. Crime fiction at its finest! 3y
Bklover Thank you!! 3y
