A soft pick, because I love Don Winslow—especially the way he writes dialogue because his characters talk like real people I know. But this book? I felt like I‘d read it already. And already seen the movie. The mafia/mobster trope has been done to death (pardon the pun). Still, it‘s a fast-paced read, and I‘ll likely read the rest of the trilogy when books 2 and 3 come out. Because … Don Winslow. 🤷🏻♀️
If you like a tale of Irish and Italian mafia then this is the book for you. A quick read but kind of blah and the ending left room for so much more.
Such a good book. About 2 crime families, one Irish and one Italian, and their fight to control a city. I've read a few of Winslow books and this didn't disappoint. This is a first in a trilogy and I am already looking forward to the next one. Really good!!
Sharing a laugh with author Don Winslow after a thought-provoking Q&A session and reading from his new book in Westerly, Rhode Island. This is his final book tour! He‘s retiring to concentrate his efforts on being an advocate and activist for democracy.
Took me a bit to get into this one, but once it flashed back to a mom‘s juicy origin story, I was hooked and ended up loving it. It felt very Don-Winslow-does-The-Sopranos to me, in a good way. He's been an auto-read author for me for a while, esp. bc his books are those rare titles that my sometimes-reader husband and I both enjoy (and that Winslow is a local author for us is a fun bonus). Glad we‘ll have more of this series!
Another truly stunning novel by Don Winslow. First in a trilogy, this centers around Italian and Irish crime families who go to war in the 80s. Danny Ryan is a perfect lead character and the tension and action that builds throughout just draws you in. Book 2 doesn't come out until next April, but I am sure it will be worth the wait!
This is an old-fashioned story about two rival mob factions in Rhode Island, the Italians and the Irish. Lots of crosses and double-crosses makes for an exciting read in The Godfather style although not as epic. (Providence, I just read, is the most bookstore-friendly city in the US, followed by my native Hartford). The author‘s style is very easy and while the book is a bit cliched, I enjoyed the story.
Happy publication day to one of my most highly anticipated books of the year. This is the first in a trilogy. Don Winslow is an absolute favorite author of mine. Can't wait to dive into this tonight!
