The Blue: A Novel | Lucy Clarke
Pickpick

Kitty and Lana, best friends looking for adventure stumble on it on The Blue, a yacht with a crew of like-minded people. The yacht is sailing to NewZealand from The Philippines. At first everything is idyllic but when one of the crew disappears, things start to fall apart. I think the novel was a little drawn out but the story is good and you can lose yourself on the yacht. It‘s just what I needed for my present state of mind

In the ‘70s, Go Ask Alice came out, purportedly the diary of a 15-year old girl who got into drugs and died. There was a frenzy among parents and the government alike. Satanism, misinformation about LSD, pot, all impelled by the editor of the diary, Beatrice Sparks who subsequently produced other “diaries”. The press was complicit and it seemed such a herd mentality that no one stopped to think and ask questions. Rick Emerson does a good job

The 6:20 Man: A Thriller | David Baldacci
Pickpick

I really liked this book. Travis Devine is a former Army Ranger now working in finance after leaving the Army under mysterious circumstances. When Sarah Ewes, a fellow employee whom he dated briefly, is found hanged in the office he decides to investigate since he obviously would be a suspect. Each chapter is like peeling an onion with lots of suspicious characters. It‘s a great escape read where you say “just one more chapter”.

After a string of mediocre thrillers and as you can tell from my reviews, I had an”AHA” moment and decided to skip “ the next “Gone Girl” (I think at this point even “Gone Girl isn‘t the next GG!) and read this. It is the story of two Indian families and the traditional v. modern, misunderstandings, hope, despair - life. Finally a book where I liked the characters. When a chapter concentrated on one character I kept thinking what about the other.

I liked this until halfway thru when everyone was totally off kilter. Amaya and Kaavi had been friends since childhood until a mysterious rift split them and now Kaavi who is inordinately wealthy is marrying Amaya‘s ex boyfriend. Amaya journeys from California to her native Sri Lank to stop the wedding with some bagels plans. I will never reveal spoilers. This book is fine if you put your logic on ice

This book remind me of those movies where the heroine is about to open a door while the audience yells don‘t. People have been disappearing form the lodge where Abby is the manager but she just starts to realize something is wrong when a missing reporter‘s brother shows up. Also I didn‘t need the author to repeat over and over that there was only one good spot for Wi-Fi. Slow moving and not a likeable one in the bunch

An honest assessment, this book was aimless and boring. The MC is a lawyer who quit his big firm and now picks up jobs wherever he can. A mysterious woman asks him to track down her husband who she believes is stealing precious books from her family. The next day the real wife, an acclaimed author shows up. I believe it‘s semi autobiographical as the author left a large firm. I just found it a tedious read and kept dozing off.

Mehso-so

You can‘t look away because this book is stunningly bad! There is really no suspense in the story of Molly, an aspiring writer and Jake, a rocker on the rise. Throw in Sabrina who is obsessed with both and you have a tell not show book. Too much floppy hair and tears running down cheeks and same being wiped away and so much booze. Do yourself a favor and look away immediately. I almost gave it a pan. It was close. Even my car Cassie was bored.

Sorry if my reviews lately have been negative but I have to say that I found this book boring. Six women gather on Greek island for a hen party, the British version of a bachelorette do. Each woman is hiding something but the secrets are just meh. I don‘t want to say too much because I hate spoiling a read for others. The It Girl | Ruth Ware
Mehso-so

I like Ruth Ware and some of her books. This was not one of them. Three quarters of the book is the MC, Hannah Jones‘ anguish that her testimony sent the wrong man to prison for the murder of her roommate. Repetitious to the point that I wanted to say move along already. I also didn‘t think there was much mystery. Read it and tell me I was way off base. I‘ll accept the criticism. Off to find my next read. Happy reading Littens !

BookLineNSinker I totally agree with you!! I was starting to second guess myself because of all the reviews from people who loved it but it was too much for me. It was a lot of storylines and things that didn't make sense to me.. I am going to try The Lying Game and see if I like that. 2mo
LKK526 @BookLineNSinker I just saw the head of Amazon books and she said her pick for thriller this summer is Things We Do In The Dark. I am going to give it a look. The book I am in the middle of is Can‘t Look Away and I think I am going to have to rate it so-so. I hate to do this because I‘ve had a run of mediocre books but I have to be honest even tho it might turn off some littens. Try Mouth to Mouth. Loved it. 2mo

I actually had this on my TBR pile when I stumbled on it in the library. And a good thing too because I got really sick of these whiny women and would have returned it. There is a mystery plot which wasn‘t bad but women in their 30s who are college graduates should have more sense and not be so dependent on men. I am not anti-men so no letters please (LOL) but these women lived inside their own minds and lacked the courage to confront their mates.

Criticizing the plot of a Elin Hilderbrand novel is like being mean to a puppy. It‘s hard to do. Fast reading. Homecoming is about a lawyer who left his family and the country but now wants to come back. Strawberry Moon concerns a young man on death row and if you are anti-execution, it makes a powerful statement. The book title novella concerns 2 lawyer partners who can‘t stand each other. Their father is in prison for killing their mother. There is some humor in it. The problem with novellas is you want them to go on longer

This book is called a gripping psychological thriller packed with suspense. The only suspense here is how this dreadful book got published. A wife suspects her husband had a part in the murder of his friend when they were in high school in a bomb shelter on the property that they used as a clubhouse. She manages to get into the house while the current owners are away for a month to dig up the shelter all by herself. Ridiculousnesses ensues.

Three women approaching their 40s are taken with the handsome stranger (pardon the cliché) who moves into their upper middle class neighborhood in Texas. If you enjoy books about three grown women who talk and act like teenagers this is the book for you. Some of the verbal idioms seem out of the ‘80s like calling each other “woman” and the over use of “into you”. I was embarrassed for them. Also some of the metaphors were just disjarring.

Rose, Aki‘s older sister, secures early release and is sent to Chicago where she is making preparations for the remainder of her family to join her. This book is timely due to the subject of the ugliness of racism and touching on abortion while giving me a good story.

This is an old-fashioned story about two rival mob factions in Rhode Island, the Italians and the Irish. Lots of crosses and double-crosses makes for an exciting read in The Godfather style although not as epic. (Providence, I just read, is the most bookstore-friendly city in the US, followed by my native Hartford). The author‘s style is very easy and while the book is a bit cliched, I enjoyed the story.

I teetered between so-so and pan. You can see my decision. I thought the plot was convoluted and the author switched the POV without warning. Sometimes I was half-way thru a paragraph before I realized it was a different character so similar were the voices. Also no time frame was given but cell phones and the internet are not mentioned. If that reflects on my intelligence so be it, but again, there are better books.

It‘s not a spoiler to say that a murder occurs in the very first line of this book. It‘s not a thriller. Two teenage girls are in love with one boy. It‘s a character study of people adrift. The story is told from several female points of view. I think the reader will have a hard time liking any of these individuals and I thought the ending was a little too pat. This is a book you can probably read in a day.

The Cartographers | Peng Shepherd

It may be a little far fetched in places and I‘ve read some littants who have given it negative reviews which is why I debated with so-so but I don‘t want to discourage someone based on my opinion. You guys mean a lot to me

bthegood People feel differently about different books - honest reviews are fine - no litten will ever hold a grudge because they liked a book someone else didn't or disliked a book someone else liked- littens just want to read and want to know what you are reading and what you think about what you are reading 🙂 (edited) 6mo

LKK526 @bthegood I did like it. I just should have expanded my review a little more 6mo

Pickpick

I wavered between giving this a thumbs up and a so-so. It wasn‘t what I expected -not sure what I did expect- but in the end I decided I liked it . The story centers around an old folded map you could get at any gas station maybe 70+ years ago. The map is very rare. There is a mystery and a little magic and you just have to know what is so special about this map.

Eggs Sounds good! 6mo

LibrarianRyan not yet. im afraid ill get addicted. 6mo
LKK526 I wait until midnight so I can do puzzle first thing. You are right to avoid. I bet you‘d be excellent at it 6mo

bthegood Yes and I love it too! 6mo
LKK526 @bthegood what are your favorite start words? I have good luck with tears and adios 6mo
LKK526 @AmandaBlaze how is Book of Cold Cases? I‘m reading the Cartographers but might do that next 6mo
AmandaBlaze I haven't read it yet. My mom did, though, and loved it. (edited) 6mo
LKK526 @AmandaBlaze good to know. 6mo
Deblovestoread Yes but I can‘t play til I‘ve had my coffee. I usually start with adieu, stain or arise. Glad it is a once a day puzzle only…but I also play Wordly. Different app, same game. 😊 6mo
LKK526 @Kdgordon88 I‘ll have to try Wordly too. I like arise. Have some luck with sauce 6mo
bthegood I start with Roast or Power, sometimes Quote to be daring 😊 6mo
LKK526 Adieu works sometimes. Quote is pretty risky! 6mo
Eggs No 🤷‍♀️ 6mo
janeycanuck We both do Wordle, Quordle (though, it repeats words so that‘s not very fun), and Heardle in our house. I‘ll occasionally do Nerdle and my spouse does Semantle almost every day. 6mo
LKK526 @janeycanuck wow! I feel like a slacker compared to you. LOL. Will have to check out (edited) 6mo
janeycanuck @LKK526 lol - I probably spend more time playing than I should 🤪 6mo
LKK526 @janeycanuck i can‘t resist word games. Love NY Times crossword😃 6mo

Pickpick

I really liked this book and not just because it takes place partly in West Hartford, Connecticut where I am from. It‘s a twist on Christie‘s “And Then There Were None”. I am always nervous about inadvertently spilling spoilers (alliteration, please…) so I‘ll just say it was a fun read.

The censorship of books is disconcerting. If you don‘t want to read something don‘t, but don‘t abrogate my right to so so. No earth shattering observations here but needs to be said. The only way a book can hurt me is if you hit me over the head with it. Apologies to those I didn‘t tag

LibrarianRyan I agree.! 6mo

Impressive. I ordered this as soon as I read the article about it being banned.

bthegood I have this also - its on my TBR list - FYI you can reply to peoples comments by clicking on their comment (on the computer there is a little button to the right/bottom of the comment that you can hit) - a box opens for your reply - it keeps the conversation in the same post - makes it easier to follow the conversations ( I think) 🙂 (edited) 6mo
LKK526 Thanks for the tip. The only thing I have t the bottom of your comment are 3 dots but it just says edit or delete. Am I looking in wrong place? 6mo
