The Village of Eight Graves
The Village of Eight Graves | Seishi Yokomizo
4 posts | 5 read | 8 to read
The third title in Japan's most popular murder mystery series -- after The Honjin Murders and The Inugami Curse -- fiendish classics featuring investigator Kosuke Kindaichi. Translated into English for the first time. Nestled deep in the mist-shrouded mountains, The Village of Eight Graves takes its name from a bloody legend: in the Sixteenth Century eight samurais, who had taken refuge there along with a secret treasure, were murdered by the inhabitants, bringing a terrible curse down upon their village. Centuries later a mysterious young man named Tatsuya arrives in town, bringing a spate of deadly poisonings in his wake. The inimitably scruffy and brilliant Kosuke Kindaichi investigates.

I enjoyed this classic Japanese murder mystery. It‘s set in a remote mountainous village with legends of buried treasure and family curses. This was a perfectly spooky book to read in October! Thanks for sending it to me, Jamie!! 👻 🍵 #LitsyLove

"I would be lying to you if I said I had never experienced anything of the kind. But, of course, I never dreamt of acting upon that desire..."
"Quite so, quite so." With a look of satisfaction, Kosuke Kindaichi scratched his shaggy head. "We ordinary members of the public commit murder in our minds on a daily basis. If only you knew how many times the inspector here has dreamt of killing me!

Were it not for the events that I am about to relate, doubtless my life would have continued in that impoverished, humdrum vein. But one day a spot of red was suddenly spilt on the grey of my life: I embarked on an adventure of dazzling mystery and stepped into a world of blood-chilling terror.

This was really good! I predicted a couple of things (never tell someone in a mystery novel to come see you tomorrow for important information… that‘s signing your death warrant) but was surprised by most of the twists and turns.

RaeLovesToRead This is a good tip for surviving a mystery novel! ? Same as if you're visiting Midsomer, don't join a local interest group with Joyce Barnaby & if you're in an episode of Scooby Doo, don't announce "hey gang, let's split up!" ?? 2y
rabbitprincess @RaeLovesToRead Haha yes, not splitting up is another excellent tip! I really need to read 2y
