Island: The Collected Stories of Alistair MacLeod | Alistair MacLeod
9 posts | 7 read | 5 to read
Alistair MacLeod has been hailed internationally as a master of the short story. Now MacLeods collected stories, including two never before published, are gathered together for the first time in Island. These sixteen superbly crafted stories, most of them firmly based in Cape Breton even if its people stray elsewhere, depict men and women living out their lives against the haunting landscape that surrounds them. Focusing on the complexities and abiding mysteries at the heart of human relationships, MacLeod maps the close bonds and impassable chasms that lie between man and woman, parent and child, and invokes memory and myth to celebrate the continuity of the generations, even in the midst of unremitting change. Eloquent, humane, powerful, and told in a voice at once elegiac and life-affirming, the stories in this astonishing collection seize us from the outset and remain with us long after the final page.

Cape Breton, part of Nova Scotia, is not typically what comes to mind for #laislabonita, although it is very beautiful in a cold, rocky, rugged, soaring kind of way.
The stories in this collection are set there. MacLeod left as a young man, but Cape Breton haunted his imagination. I'm not a "Caper" but these stories capture life in Atlantic Canada. They amazed me when I read them as an undergrad. I still think about them.

JacqMac I‘m a Caper. I left at 18, but my family is still there. I might have to read this. 4y

Pickpick

These stories are well written and have a very strong sense of place (mainly Cape Breton). That said, they can get repetitive if you read too many in one sitting, and at least one talks about killing animals (in a farm context). And a few talk about sex in a potentially disturbing way. But if you like short stories or Canlit, this may be of interest.

Island is one of the books I hope to take with me on vacation this month. It and Dan Jones's The Hollow Crown are my most anticipated books for May.
