Four Futures
Four Futures: Life after Capitalism | Peter Frase
7 posts | 10 read | 2 to read
“It is easier to imagine the end of the world,” the theorist Fredric Jameson has remarked, “than to imagine the end of capitalism.” Jacobin Editor Peter Frase argues that technological advancements and environmental threats will inevitably push our society beyond capitalism, and Four Futures imagines just how this might look. Extrapolating possible futures from current changes the world is now experiencing, and drawing upon speculative fictions to illustrate how these futures might be realized, Four Futures examines communism, rentism, socialism, and exterminism – or in other words, the socialisms we may reach if a resurgent Left is successful and the barbarisms we may be consigned to if those movements fail. From the Trade Paperback edition.

The publisher Verso is having an incredible ebook sale, so I'm grabbing up just hella books on ending capitalism and racism. Just a ridiculous number of books.

A very interesting take on the possible socio-economic paths culture may take as capitalism mutates or, hopefully, dies

I bought the ebook version in December when Verso had a mega sale. This little gem theorizes four possible futures for humanity. It is up to our own political will to determine the future society we end up with. 💎

Second book started in 2017; first book finished. At times hopeful and terrifying, Frase presents some scenarios that could be our future as capitalism continues to collapse. I'm a huge proponent of the universal basic income and was glad to see it featured prominently in this work.

emilia Totally not related to the book, but I only have an electronic version and trying to crop the screenshot of the cover proved impossible! Hence no picture. 7y

This book was provided to me by NetGalley and Verso Books. All opinions are my own. Pub Date 4 Oct 2016.

In this book Peter Fraser explores possible scenarios for our society post capitalism. This is a really quick and informative read, that feels well researched and actually showed some humor every now and then. I liked that most chapters were introduced through books that described a potential future and then he built the scenarios from there.
