From #1 New York Times bestseller Katherine Applegate, a singular middle-grade novel about a girl who risks everything to help a handmade creature who comes to life. The earth is old and we are not, and that is all you must remember . . . Eleven-year-old Willodeen adores creatures of all kinds, but her favorites are the most unlovable beasts in the land: strange beasts known as screechers. The villagers of Perchance call them pests, even monsters, but Willodeen believes the animals serve a vital role in the complicated web of nature. Lately, though, nature has seemed angry indeed. Perchance has been cursed with fires and mudslides, droughts and fevers, and even the annual migration of hummingbears, a source of local pride and income, has dwindled. For as long as anyone can remember, the tiny animals have overwintered in shimmering bubble nests perched atop blue willow trees, drawing tourists from far and wide. This year, however, not a single hummingbear has returned to Perchance, and no one knows why. When a handmade birthday gift brings unexpected magic to Willodeen and her new friend, Connor, shes determined to speak up for the animals she loves, and perhaps even uncover the answer to the mystery of the missing hummingbears. A timely and timeless tale about our fragile earth, and one girls fierce determination to make a difference.

I listened to this while walking. It‘s a MG fantasy about a girl who loves “screechers” creatures that most people do not like; message being that nature knows more than we humans do. It was not my cup of tea 🍵

Such a beautiful story. 💜💙💚

This MG fantasy is much more than it appears to be. It's a story of love, loss, friendship, acceptance, and standing up for those who can't speak for themselves. It's a magical tale of stinky pig like creatures and one girl's devotion to making people see that everything around us is connected.

A very cute and imaginative book with a timeless message about the bonds of Nature and humanity. Applegate‘s prose is poetic without being hard to decipher and the message never feels too forced or blatant. My 9-year-old absolutely loved it. And I enjoyed it, as well.

This book reminded me of playing imaginary play. it's the kind of story you make up in your head and create a whole play life to.

Willodeen, published in 2021 was a majestically read. The descriptions on each page made the story so much more enjoyable. With each black and writing drawing here and there made the story continue in a beautiful way. I would definitely recommend regarding a story that is different than most chapter books.

I liked this book I liked the message it told that no matter who you are you can make a difference in the world. I also like the charterers are made up and unique in their own way.

Willodeen, Kathrine Applegate, 2021. This book is about someone who loves the common thing that the whole town hates. Her town is cursed with weird nature, including natural disasters. The girl decided to track down and find out the animal she adores, a screeched“ is not out anymore.

Jumping from the imaginary creatures of the ALICE books to the imaginary creatures of Willodeen with my 9-year-old. We‘re both digging it so far; she‘s already in love with the hummingbears. I‘m loving the prose - simple enough for its intended audience yet very poetic.

I was concerned when i started this book. Imaginative animals were dropped into the story with little explanation and a traumatic event rocks the life of the protagonist before we have a chance to feel at home in this strange new world. This short story wastes no time in frills. Community endangerment and strength, ecology, scientific method and conservation. Friendship and bravery. It is all in here and it works.

I adored Willodeen‘s character, found her relatable at times, and felt a great tug upon my heart throughout this tale. Applegate proved, once again, that she can expertly probe emotions, although this story didn‘t cut me quite as deeply as The One and Only Ivan. Regardless, I really enjoyed the book. I think it offers an important perspective about nature that speaks to children and adults alike.

Don‘t stop being angry, Willodeen. It‘s part of who you are. You see the world differently. You care. That‘s a gift.

"...?????? ????? ???? ???? ?? ??. ??? ??? ???????? ?????? ????."⁣

An adorable middle grade novel that teaches the importance of respecting the balance of nature. I enjoyed the main character and the whimsical creatures that Applegate has created. Just enough of a fantasy to be an escape, while being close enough to reality that everyone will enjoy this book.
