This one has some hard moments and are revealed just at the right time, there is a lot that can be said about this book. All I would say is that this was a difficult book to read but it had some really nice moments as well. It rightly captures the journey of the people involved in a tragedy, how it impacted their life's and how they got past it, learned to live with it.

This was a roller coaster of emotion. This is an incredibly written book.It keeps you engaged. The arc of each character is just right. The ups & downs of the sister relationship is so beautifully captured but this book is not for the squeamish bcoz the crimes commited are very detailed. The father in the dysfunctional family wins the character of d book, kind of the moral center.
This is one of those books that stays with you for a really long time.

gradcat I love Karin Slaughter‘s books—have read them all—but I think all of her books would qualify as “not for the squeamish.” She does get pretty graphic. 1d
Shamzi @gradcat this was my first of hers but definitely not the last. Can you suggest some other books by her!! 1d
gradcat I love the “Grant County” series, the first one is titled “Blindsighted.” But most people REALLY love the “Will Trent” series, the first of which is tagged below. I love them all, but Grant County does provide a huge back story for Will‘s love interest, so if you really want the whole experience, start there. Otherwise, Will & his partner Faith are SO good! ♥️ 1d
Shamzi @gradcat wow! Than you so much!! 20h

There is a twist at the end of chapter 11, not going to reveal what it is but the twist had me flustered. I did not see that coming. I stopped reading, took a while to take it all in.

I thought this was a book about two sisters and their journey through the tragedies in their life but the back drop of the school shooting mystery is equally mystifying.

Loved Frodo's struggle to let go of The Ring. I loved that he could not let it go. This moment of Frodo shows his frailty, his desire to the do the right thing but succumbing to the allures of absolute power and even immortality. The Ring symbolises this struggle.
I was thrown at times bcoz a large part of this book is just characters traveling, but the Frodo moment was completely worth the wait.
Read the trilogy with patience, you will love it.

Book 3: Gone,Baby, Gone

This book leaves you with moral questions of right & wrong, social & individual responsibilities, something everyone struggles with everyday. The conflict b/w the 2 PIs on the fate of a 4 year child is most intriguing. The book is complex, serious and beautiful. This book moved me from YA to a more "adult" writing where characters are more developed, have a wider arc. This is a thrilling, gripping ride.

TiredLibrarian Ooh, I loved this book, and I wish Lehane would write more in the Kenzie & Gennaro series! Movie's not bad, either. 2w

Book 2: 1Q84

You will read many fantasy books but there will be none like 1Q84. Its mind bending plot, complex protagonist. Murakami, like most of his novels, creates a unique and addictive world. The book of this size can be boring at times but the thrills it gives is beyond measure.

I love fantasy and I think it is largely because of the beauty of this book, the plot which is mind boggling always remains with you.

Hazel2019 Yes! I absolutely loved 1Q84. The length of it is really necessary. Can‘t imagine being satisfied with only a short stay in that universe. 3w
Shamzi @Hazel2019 Each character had a strong story arc and in order for it be that good, it had to this long. Also I read it as a single book, it actually has 3 volumes!! 3w

Frodo, Sam, Merry, Pippin, Gandalf the Gray, Gimli the Dwarf, Legolas the elf, Aragorn Son of Arathorn, Boromir and of course Bill the pony.

So lovely was the fellowship, so deep was their friendship, so mesmerising was the book.
Pick it, read it and you will love it.

I only wish Tom Bombadil had reappeared in the book again. He was such an interesting character!!

This is a hard book to follow or is it just me with my partially functioning brain. Everything starts making sense after the Council of Elrond, the epicness of it. It astonishes me how people are able to create such mystical world that you want to live in.
I wish I hadn't seen the movies all those years ago. It was a long time ago and I don't remember everything.
I am starting to Capture how epic this book is.

Also, I love the cracked spine.

50 BOOKS I LOVE
Book 1: The Famous Five series
I come from a small town with no reading culture,we had no book stores.Fortunately,we had a small library at school & period set up for reading.Everyone had to issue a book & read it since you had to give book review. So, grudgingly, as homework, I picked up one of the famous five books because it had the most fancy cover and fell in love with it.

CONTD. IN COMMENTS

Shamzi It had everything a kid always desires- mystery, fun, adventure, a dog, being smart and brave.

Week after week I read them(library didn't have all the books) and wanted more. Georgina or George was my favorite of the five. These books are special as they were the first ones I ever read and you never forget a first!!

Apart from Shantaram, there are a number of noteworthy characters:-
My favorite is Abdul Khader Khan. Khader bhai sets the tone of the book, his ideas, philosophy, are very agreeable, but towards the end you get to know that he has been playing Shantaram all along. He starts off as a fatherly figure but in the end you realize that he is a gangster, a crime boss, a thug who is using everyone around him for his own goals.
Dark & Interesting!!

Chapter 23 of this book is one of the finest peice of writing I have ever read. It has a peolonged discussion on good and evil. What does it mean, who decides b/w the two and how the universe is moving towards the ultimate good reffered here as "tendency towards complexity".

Sharing a small excerpt from the chapter.

A good fantasy book or series is not just about good story, its about creating a whole new world which is beyond imagination yet very believable. Its beauty lies in the fact that you see yourself living in this world. This is a good fantasy book.
The start was slow but once the story picked pace, it was very enjoyable. The end was superb. I quickly started book 2 and came to know book 3 is still to be released so will have to wait for a while.

This one is a real page turner, so many absurd and wild things happen in this one, sometines it's hard to keep up, but everything has a connection. This is Murakami at his best, creating a very relatable story along with fantastical elements. Would highly recommend it but would also advise to read it slowly to really enjoy it and keep track of everything.
