From a beloved fantasy author comes this fresh feminist retelling of Sleeping Beauty about one girl destined for greatnessand the powerful sister ready to protect her by any means necessary. Miriam may be the daughter of Queen Alethia of Tirendell, but she's not a princess. She's the child of Alethia and her previous husband, the King's Champion, who died fighting for the king, and she has no ambitions to rule. When her new baby sister Aurora, heir to the throne, is born, she's ecstatic. She adores the baby, who seems perfect in every way. But on the day of Aurora's christening, an uninvited Dark Fae arrives, prepared to curse her, and Miriam discovers she possesses impossible power. Soon, Miriam is charged with being trained in both magic and combat to act as chief protector to her sister. But shadowy threats are moving closer and closer to their kingdom, and Miriam's dark power may not be enough to save everyone she loves, let alone herself.

This was such an innocent and cozy read focusing on friendship and family. There is Fae, talking forest animals, knights, a unicorn, dragon, goblins, and trolls. I liked the simple adventure of the story and that it revolved around helping each other rather than war.

So far, this book is exactly what kind of story I was needing to lose myself in! I am loving it. Currently Dark fae and Light Fae are attending Auroras christening when thunder fills the Hall and a Dark Fae comes striding through and parting the crowd. Cannot wait to see where this story goes.

KateReadsYA @dabbe hahaha I have been loving watermelon! We buy so many during the summer, it's the perfect snack. I drizzle chamoy and tajin on it :) 9mo

As I have come to expect from Mercedes Lackey, this book was a delight. However I am a bit confused as to whether or not this book is the first of the series… more research is needed….

This is a nice happy book, with a protagonist with actual character development, and the world building is excellent. It‘s a YA novel that isn‘t all dark, depressing, and full of stupid characters who never learn.
Miri‘s little sister is going to do something great and Miri and her fellow Champions are determined to protect her from the Dark Fae. Miri discovers more about her father, learns combat and magic in her quest to save her sister. 4/5 ⭐️

Can't wait until this actually releases and I can make people read it! The ending felt a little anticlimactic, but I LOVED the worldbuilding and Miri's growth as a squire and a sorceress. Major Tamora Pierce vibes from this. #yafantasy
