The long-awaited founding of Valdemar comes to life in this new series from a New York Times bestselling author and beloved fantasist. Within the Eastern Empire, Duke Kordas Valdemar rules a tiny, bucolic Duchy that focuses mostly on horse breeding. Anticipating the day when the Empires exploitative and militant leaders would not be content to leave them alone, Kordas father set out to gather magicians in the hopes of one day finding a way to escape and protect the people of the Duchy from tyranny. Kordas has lived his life looking over his shoulder. The signs in the Empire are increasingly dire. Under the direction of the Emperor, mages have begun to harness the power of dark magics, including blood magic, the powers of the Abyssal Planes, and the binding and "milking" of Elemental creatures. But then one of the Duchys mages has a breakthrough. There is a way to place a Gate at a distance so far from the Empire that it is unlikely the Emperor can find or follow them as they evacuate everyone that is willing to leave. But time is running out, and Kordas has been summoned to the Emperor's Court. Can his reputation as a country bumpkin and his acting skills buy him and his people the time they need to flee? Or will the Emperor lose patience, invade to strip Valdemar of everything of worth, and send its conscripted people into the front lines of the Imperial wars?

This is my Christmas gift to myself- reliving a bit of my childhood with brand-new books set in Lackey‘s Valdemar world. This kicks of a new series about the founding of Valdemar. Duke Kordas inherited more than his duchy and a talent for horse-breeding, but also a Plan to save his people from the endless cruelty of the Emperor. And finally the pieces fit for them to enact it! Spies, adventure, magic and a love of animals blends well here!

GondorGirl I will forever buy and read every Valdemar book Misty writes. She was my gateway into fantasy as a tween. 🥰 1y
TorieStorieS @GondorGirl I feel absolutely the same! Years may go by as an adult between me picking up one of her books, but each time I do, it‘s just like coming home!🥰🥰🥰 1y

I know she has said some disappointing things about trans characters of late, but I loved Valdemar as a child, and she was one of the first genre authors I read that included LGBTQ characters (though there was a lot of trauma there), so I just had to read this book. It took me back, and there were queer characters who didn‘t have trauma, and I thought it was pretty great. Hopefully she will grow from the controversy and not double down.

The origin story of the kingdom of Valdemar. I like the tribute to P.G. Wodehouse‘s 🐖 Empress of Blandings. And Tolkien, with the Brandywine stream

I‘m not sure what distinguishes those with a Gift from mages though. She tends to show and then tell as well.

humouress I wonder why there‘s such a rush to implement the plan that has been generations in making just because they finally found a way to make it work? And why things aren‘t more ready to go? *sigh* And again with the italics ... (edited) 3y
