This is a curious little book that I thoroughly enjoyed. There is a retelling of a medieval ghost story bracketed by the story of how the manuscript was found and the history of where the story was set.

It includes the Latin text which was a nice addition. I was more interested in the transmission of the text and that was a decent amount of time spent on that.

This is a retelling of a 15th century ghost story. Dan Jones provides background on the discovery of the original manuscript, his version of the tale, and then history of the monastery where the ghost stories originated. A very short, quick read, this is fun find and I may even consider making it an annual spooky season read.

Sweetkokoro I have this too and I actually found the way Jones wrote about the history to be more “scary” than the actual tale haha. But it‘s super quick to read and I loved the insight into what a scary story from the 15th century was like. 1y
DGRachel @Sweetkokoro The ghost story was fun, but I definitely enjoyed the history lesson even more. 1y

#WondrousWednesday on Friday. I was in travel this week for work, and it was kind of a crazy week.

1. done
2. Haven‘t had a chance to read a lot this month, so it was probably Death at Victoria Dock by Kerry Greenwood. Phryne Fisher is always fun to hang out with for a bit.
3. That‘s a tough one… Prague, Alaska and Key West.

Thanks for the tag @Eggs

JenReadsAlot Prague was a favorite for me too! 2y

I enjoyed Dan Jones‘s tv series “Great British Castles” on Netflix, and I‘ve bought a couple of his British history books. This was a cool novella about a medieval ghost story selected from a book discovered in an abbey. Jones gives background about the story before he dives in, and he talks about the history of the abbey after the story. I enjoyed his narration and the little window this story gave into what creeped out Medieval England 👻

catiewithac This has been on my TBR forever! 2y
RosePressedPages @catiewithac it‘s definitely a bit weird but I enjoyed it a lot! 2y

Finished this little book today, a nice retelling (not translation) of a medieval ghost story with a Latin transcription included.
