6 posts | 6 read
Hunted by monsters. Wanted for questioning. Late for class. Four high-school friends suffer daily humiliation at the hands of three bullies. When the friends accidentally open a portal to another dimension, they unintentionally allow terrifying, other-worldly creatures to invade their small Arkansas town. Discovering that they are now endowed with strange superpowers, the four teens dub themselves Freaks, the very name their tormentors used to ridicule them. The Freaks must fight to save the lives of family and friends now in mortal peril and thwart a secret government task force that appears to be hunting them.

Pickpick

Book 216🎧 3⭐️

Not a raging “pick” but still a fun mutant style novel!

A few high school kids find a book with some black magic and decide it would be a great idea to try a spell out. They get powers and invite an entity from another world in too!

Mehso-so

This story is very much Chronicle meets Stranger Things.

Mehso-so

This is my first read by Brett Riley. A group of bullied high schoolers open an ancient portal that releases creatures into the town and some how gives them special powers. This gave me some horror/superhuman comic book vibes. There were times that there was too little information or too much.

Thanks NetGalley and Imbriflex Audio.

Panpan

Freaks could have been a book I loved and I'm sad to give it a pan because based on the premise I thought it would be a great read. Bullied teens find themselves with powers after pretending to cast a spell that actually works to their surprise.

There is not much character development. The story has too many unexplained tangents and the resolution feels rushed and forced.

vlwelser I bailed on this fairly early on. It seems like that may have been a solid choice. Great review! 2y
vivastory I haven't read this, but the premise reminds me of the following which I did enjoy 2y
Addison_Reads @vlwelser I thought about bailing, but I hoped the ending might redeem things. It did not. 2y
Addison_Reads @vivastory I thought that too when I saw it in NetGalley because I really enjoyed Signal to Noise. This one wasn't even close other than the description. 😕 2y
