The Calfbearer
The Calfbearer | Ida Graves
2 posts | 1 read | 2 to read
Ida Affleck Graves, was first published as Ida Graves by Lenoard Woolf and the Hogarth Press; later (post-war) novels came from Faber. Then a long silence, during which she wrote but stuffed poems into a drawer, was broken by OUP's book of poems, A Kind Husband, published in 1994. The Calfbearer consists of nearly all new poems, written since then, as vigorous and moving as ever. The poems are emphatic and observant, on subjects such as her childhood, animals; and a few that look bravely on death. Ida Affleck Graves will be 97 in March 1999 This book is intended for poetry readers, and women's studies' courses.

"Newborn, fresh licked, still slobbering,
I lift this calf and drape it, a warm scarf,
About me, neck shoulders, around my need for loving.
I bunch the infant bull hooves, my greed for him,
In one knotted clasp, in my two fists, in no doubt,
My wide elbows the structure of our unity, our debt.
Our faces side by side, close, calf gaze milky with content.
So what now, my little god bull, my burden,
This to be a statue, shrine, an idea, gift, glory."

Pickpick

There's something poignant about poems of childhood written by a poet reaching the end of life. Ida Graves, a distant cousin of Robert Graves, was a member of the Bloomsbury Group, first published in the '20s, who put this book into print in 1999, the year of her death, aged 97.
The poems arc from birth, through childhood, into maturity and end with a group looking at death. The title poem, and first in the collection, may well be my favourite.

Leftcoastzen I had no idea! Very interesting, stacked! 2y
Bookwomble @Leftcoastzen I rate it 4/5 stars, so a solid pick, if not right up there. That's on a first read, though, so there's scope for adjustment after a revisit 🙂 2y
