A vivid and colorful history of the most dominant royal dynasty in English history, from Richard the Lionheart and Edward the Black Prince to Henry IV and Richard III The Plantagenets reigned over England longer than any other familyfrom Henry II to Richard III. Four kings were murdered, two came close to being deposed, and the lastand most notorious, Richard IIIwas killed in a battle by rebels. Shakespeare wrote plays about six of them, further entrenching them in the national myth. Based on major contemporary sources and recent research, acclaimed historian Desmond Seward provides the first readable overview of the whole extraordinary dynasty, in one volume.

Pickpick

This book provides a good historical overview of each of the Plantagenet kings. It‘s a “just the facts” sort of book, which is pretty typical of this historian. I‘d recommend for anyone interested in the era or wanting a companion to Shakespeare‘s histories.

If you are looking for a Philippa Gregory/Hilary Mantel sort of storytelling, this is not it.

Richard I (the Lionheart) did not know English. This was a “wait. . . what?!?” moment for me. 😂 It makes perfect sense if you think about his life, but seems odd given he was the king of England and the portrayal he has often been given in film, etc. #rainydayreading
