An explosive thriller debut introducing Peter Ash, a veteran who finds that the demons of war aren t easily left behind . . . Peter Ash came home from the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan with only one souvenir: what he calls his white static, the buzzing claustrophobia due to post-traumatic stress that has driven him to spend a year roaming in nature, sleeping under the stars. But when a friend from the Marines commits suicide, Ash returns to civilization to help the man s widow with some home repairs. Under her dilapidated porch, he finds more than he bargained for: the largest, ugliest, meanest dog he s ever encountered . . . and a Samsonite suitcase stuffed with cash and explosives. As Ash begins to investigate this unexpected discovery, he finds himself at the center of a plot that is far larger than he could have imagined . . . and it may lead straight back to the world he thought he d left for good.Suspenseful and thrilling, and featuring a compelling new hero, "The Drifter" is an exciting debut from a fresh voice in crime fiction."

What a great book! And it‘s Petrie‘s first novel? Unbelievable. The Drifter is the first in a series about a Marine vet coping with PTS, in this story trying to help the widow of a friend, and getting caught up in a plot that could kill thousands. Petrie writes like a pro, establishing characters I hope I can see again, and deftly throwing in red herring and avoiding cliches. Read this book!

First read of 2018! A solid thriller featuring a tough yet kind vet with PTSD trying to figure out how his buddy died. The ending is a little rushed, but veterans issues are interwoven well into page-turning action. I prefer female protagonists, but got this for a new book group & enjoyed it. #4stars #goodcharacters

This book was awesome! Can't wait to read more 'Peter Ash' novels. (Not a Jack Reacher re-make at all.) Peter is a vet with "static" (PTSD). While helping a friends family he stumbles upon a plot of epic proportions. He begins to find a purpose again. Great action and couldn't wait to find out what was next! ???

Similar in entertainment value as the early Reacher (Lee Child‘s) Books. But a less omnipotent, more damaged, in other words, a more human Reacher. I‘ll be reading more.

Peter has PTSD and has isolated himself from everyone. When he hears his best friend has committed suicide, he decides to pay his respects by doing some carpentry work for the widow. What he doesn‘t expect to find is a huge, pissed off dog and a suitcase with C-4 and 400,000 dollars stashed under the porch. If you like Robert Crais‘ Joe Pike series, you will like this high octane adventure. It isn‘t deep but it‘s a fun ride.

The term "page turner" has always bothered me somewhat. As if getting SO deep into a book so very quickly that you cannot put it down is EVER bad thing. This was, indeed, a "page turner" with teeth, humor, compassion, honor, action, and rather poignant political view of our veterans tossed aside like so much trash when they return home. Pick it up, devour it in a day, and be better for it.

A friend recommended this book and I'm so glad she did! A fabulous thriller set in my home state of Wisconsin. The author combines action, mystery, and a very smelly but loyal dog into a really good story. I hope we see Peter in more stories. And it's the first book finished on vacation - off to a great start!
