Focus: The Hidden Driver of Excellence | Daniel Goleman
7 posts | 14 read | 11 to read
In Focus, Psychologist and journalist Daniel Goleman, author of the #1 international bestseller Emotional Intelligence, offers a groundbreaking look at todays scarcest resource and the secret to high performance and fulfillment: attention. Combining cutting-edge research with practical findings, Focus delves into the science of attention in all its varieties, presenting a long overdue discussion of this little-noticed and under-rated mental asset. In an era of unstoppable distractions, Goleman persuasively argues that now more than ever we must learn to sharpen focus if we are to survive in a complex world. Goleman boils down attention research into a threesome: inner, other, and outer focus. Drawing on rich case studies from fields as diverse as competitive sports, education, the arts, and business, he shows why high-achievers need all three kinds of focus, and explains how those who rely on Smart Practicesmindfulness meditation, focused preparation and recovery, positive emotions and connections, and mental prosthetics that help them improve habits, add new skills, and sustain greatnessexcel while others do not.

This was okay… good tips and anecdotes. Trying to keep myself motivated in my career and moving ahead. Time to focus.

fredthemoose Oooh… I go through phases of the same thing and reading similar books. I remember liking the tagged book but it‘s been a few years. Are there others you recommend? 3y
Cosmos_Moon_River @fredthemoose I read Cheryl Sandburg‘s Lean In this year, I give it an “okay”. I liked it better than I thought I would. I thought this one was better, focusing on women and confidence by Katty Kay and Claire Shipman… (edited) 3y

Ironically given the subject matter, this book seemed unfocused and disorganized to me. It felt like he actually wanted to write a book on leadership, not the neuroscience of focus and attention.

I am interested in reading his other book Emotional Intelligence now. I liked this one, especially the second half of the book where he discusses meditation, mindfulness, and positivity and their impacts on our brains and decisions.

Being the science journalist that he is, Goleman gives an in-depth understanding of the anatomy of attention. I admittedly had to pull out my dictionary a few times, Goleman has quite an esoteric lexicon that may intimidate an infrequent reader but the message of the book shud not b lost in all the language.
When we lack focus, “we store no crisp memory of what we‘re learning.” This book will hv u looking
