The Wrong Victim
The Wrong Victim: A Novel | Allison Brennan
7 posts | 5 read | 1 to read
A bomb explodes on a sunset charter cruise out of Friday Harbor at the height of tourist season and kills everyone on board. Now this fishing and boating community is in shock and asking who would commit such a heinous crimethe largest act of mass murder in the history of the San Juan Islands. Forensic profilers know there are two types of domestic terrorists: those who use violence to instill fear for political purposes but stop at murder because it detracts from the cause, and those who crave attention and are willing to maim and murder for their own agenda. Accused of putting profits before people after leaking fuel that caused a massive fish kill, the West End Charter company may itself have been the target. But as special agent Matt Costa, detective Kara Quinn and the rest of the FBI team begin their investigation, they discover that plenty of people might have wanted someone dead on that yacht. Now they must track down who is responsible and stop them before they strike again.

I‘m posting one book a day from my massive collection. No description, no reason for why I want to read it (some I‘ve had so long I don‘t even remember why!) Feel free to join in!

I have only read a few of Allison Brennan‘s books but I‘m definitely adding her to my must read list! This is the third book in the Quinn and Costa series and I loved it. I hope there will be plenty more because I love the characters and their relationships and dynamics. I must read her other books ASAP!

I seem to be reading A LOT of mysteries. After the turmoil of the pandemic, I needed the escape but also, I think, the problem solving fix that a good who-done-it delivers. This Quinn & Costa tale, the third, fills both those needs. Set in the San Juan Islands, where I used to sail, the FBI is investigating bombings that may be related to a string of cold-case murders. A bit too long, a bit repetitive but lots of suspects and good twists.

Brennan intricately wove several threads throughout the story, which culminated into one big finish. Initially, uncertainty existed regarding the connection of these threads, but throughout the progression of the story, the connection gained clarity. The last few pages of the story had me on the edge of my seat. The Wrong Victim, which works well as a stand-alone, was a great addition to the series.

The third book ft. FBI agent Matt Costa and a key member of his team, Kate Quinn. A boat explodes killing 8 people including a retired FBI agent. Costa and his team focus on who was the intended victim in order to track down the killer. The story has Criminal Mind vibes. The focus on the interpersonal lives of the characters was repetitive and boring. Thx to NetGalley & Harlequin Trade Publishing for the ARC in exchange for an honest review.

“…nine people board a charter sightseeing boat to take a tour of the San Juan Islands; twenty minutes later, the boat explodes.”

Sounds like a good one.
