Conversations with People Who Hate Me
Conversations with People Who Hate Me: 12 Things I Learned from Talking to Internet Strangers | Dylan Marron
4 posts | 5 read | 8 to read
Dylan Marron is the internets Love Warrior. His work is fresh, deeply honest, wildly creative, and right on time. Glennon Doyle, #1 New York Times bestselling author Dylan Marron is like a modern Mister Rogers for the digital age. Jason Sudeikis ??From the host of the award-winning, critically acclaimed podcast Conversations with People Who Hate Me comes a thought-provoking, witty, and inspirational exploration of difficult conversations and how to navigate them. Dylan Marrons work has racked up millions of views and worldwide support. From his acclaimed Every Single Word video series highlighting the lack of diversity in Hollywood to his web series Sitting in Bathrooms with Trans People, Marron has explored some of todays biggest social issues. Yet, according to some strangers on the internet, Marron is a moron, a beta male, and a talentless hack. Rather than running from this online vitriol, Marron began a social experiment in which he invited his detractors to chat with him on the phoneand those conversations revealed surprising and fascinating insights. Now, Marron retraces his journey through a project that connects adversarial strangers in a time of unprecedented division. After years of production and dozens of phone calls, he shares what hes learned about having difficult conversations and how having them can help close the ever-growing distance between us. Charmingly candid and refreshingly hopeful, Conversations with People Who Hate Me will serve as both a guide to anyone partaking in difficult conversations and a permission slip for those who dare to believe that connection is possible.

Interesting #audiobook based on the author‘s podcast. Dylan traces his career from acting to media personality before digging into the conversations he has had with trolls on his podcast. He selected people who made rude comments but not dangerous threats and taped a dialogue with them, and surprisingly they often ended up having a productive conversation. Now he facilitates conversations between other media figures and their trolls.

Big note ⬇️

Kimzey That does sound interesting! 🤔 2y
Megabooks ⬆️ he made it clear that it is a privilege to have the energy to have these conversations and that he, as a queer biracial man, doesn‘t receive nearly as much negativity as BIPOC women or trans people. It is a fine line between building bridges and giving a forum to hate, but he appears to be walking it. (edited) 2y

Though unfamiliar with the podcast that inspired this book, it sounded quite interesting! And it is a quick read that explores Marron‘s interactions with commenters across the Internet. While I‘m not certain that any life-changing moments will happen as a result, it‘s a bold move to open dialogue knowing that it will start from an adversarial place. I appreciated his sincerity but like the author, would have liked more dramatic conclusions!

Megabooks I‘m excited to get this from the library at midnight. 2y

Dylan Marron writes with vulnerability, clarity, passion, & empathy in this retelling of his ongoing social experiment of bring together folks who have quarreled online. There are various ways we react to opposition, but conversation is at the centre of this project, & I truly appreciated learning about the process of putting various types of media & how they impacted others. Reminders that people are all nuanced can both be exhausting & necessary
