You Have a Friend In 10A: Stories | Maggie Shipstead
3 posts | 3 read | 8 to read
"In this collection of stories, Maggie Shipstead dives into eclectic and vivid settings, from an Olympic village to a deathbed in Paris to a Pacific atoll, and illuminating a cast of indelible characters, Shipstead traverses ordinary and unusual realities with cunning, compassion, and wit. In "Acknowledgments," a male novelist reminisces bitterly on the woman who inspired his first novel, attempting to make peace with his humiliations before the book goes to print. In "The Cowboy Tango," spanning decades in the open country of Montana, a triangle of love and self-preservation plays out among an aging rancher called the Otter, his nephew, and a young woman named Sammy who works the horses"--

Pickpick

Despite one of the best covers of the year, there were a few misses in this short story collection. The title story had a memorable opening but was difficult to follow. “Lambs” a future-set story about artists didn‘t work for me either.

HOWEVER, there were several bright spots: “La Moretta” is one of the finest stand-alone stories I‘ve read this year. “Angel Lust” is wonderfully f***ed up, and “The Cowboy Tango” made my heart dance.

Megabooks @Cinfhen not connected, but someday I‘ll make you like unconnected collections! 😉😘 2y
Cinfhen 😂😂😆😘 2y
BarbaraBB I‘ll leave it for now even though I love that cover too 2y

I haven't read it yet, but I have to say the cover of the new Maggie Shipstead story collection is one of my favorites of the year.

sarahbarnes What?? Amazing! 2y
vivastory @sarahbarnes Isn't it? I might have to pick it up soon, even though I still have Great Circle on my TBR 2y
sarahbarnes Yes! I liked Great Circle a lot - I‘ll be interested to see what she does with the short story genre. 2y

BarbaraBB I just mentioned to @Megabooks that I LOVE this cover too. I am not always a fan of short stories but I‘d read these because of its cover! 2y
vivastory @BarbaraBB I don't read stories very often, but when they work well I love them. I hope that is the case here. Will be giving them a try once I read The Great Circle. 2y
Megabooks Yeah, I posted this to Instagram on Tuesday! It‘s in my wish list for sure. 2y
vivastory @Megabooks I *almost* tagged you bc of your love for story collections but I remembered that you didn't care for The Great Circle 2y

Some of these are excellent short stories. Others sort of fail imo because they seem more like teasers that should be actual novels. But overall this is definitely a pick for me. And the cover is sort of awesome.
