Hotel of Secrets
Hotel of Secrets | Diana Biller
4 posts | 4 read | 12 to read
During ball season, anything can happen-- even love. It's ball season in Vienna, and Maria Wallner only wants one thing: to restore her family's hotel, the Hotel Wallner, to its former glory. She's not going to let anything get in her way - not her parents' three-decade-long affair; not seemingly-random attacks by masked assassins; and especially not the broad-shouldered American foreign agent who's saved her life two times already. No matter how luscious his mouth is. Eli Whittaker also only wants one thing: to find out who is selling American secret codes across Europe, arrest them, and go home to his sensible life in Washington, DC. He has one lead - a letter the culprit sent from a Viennese hotel. But when he arrives in Vienna, he is immediately swept up into a chaotic whirlwind of balls, spies, waltzes, and beautiful hotelkeepers who seem to constantly find themselves in danger. He disapproves of all of it! But his disapproval is tested as he slowly falls deeper into the chaos - and as his attraction to said hotelkeeper grows. Diana Biller's Hotel of Secrets is chock full of banter-filled shenanigans, must-have-you kisses, and romance certain to light a fire in the hearts of readers everywhere. A beautifully researched and emotionally complex experience, Hotel of Secrets is an opulent slice of Viennese tradition as rich as a torte and as layered as a complicated line of Strauss. With intrigue and danger that nips on the heels of its luscious waltz, Biller's lush and atmospheric escape is dolloped with romance and the deep, complicated and sigh-worthy characters that always shoot her to the top of my auto-buy list. - Rachel McMillan, author of The Mozart Code

Mehso-so

How did I get this so wrong? I thought this was historical fiction, with a mystery and light on the romance. It was mostly a historical romance—rather heavy on the sex scenes, and an uninspiring mystery. By the end of the book I didn‘t care. It started out strong. I loved the setting: Vienna in the 1800‘s. A hotel past it‘s prime. Several interesting characters. However my interest waned about ½ way through when the romance overtook the story.

#thingsincommon - spies/employees for the US Gov‘t

Set in Vienna, during ball season. Maria owns and runs her family hotel that needs to be renovated but she has no money.
Eli works for the treasury but is sent to Vienna undercover to see who sold US codes.
There are assassins and mysteries to unravel. A convoluted family tree and a celibate spy.

Loved it!

Quirkybookworm I enjoyed The House Of Secrets! It was GOOD! 12mo

OK, I loved this book. Everything about it. But especially the characters. My first from this author and set in 1870s Vienna, Maria Wallner is the 4th-generation of daughters to run her family‘s Hotel Wallner, which has sunk into disrepair due to neglect and financial woes. Eli Whittaker is an American agent sent to Vienna from DC to track down the culprits who are selling American codes across Europe. As Eli, based at Hotel Wallner, 🔻

robinb begins investigating, Maria is targeted for unknown reasons…are they connected? They must unravel suspects/motives to get to the truth. Hands down, Maria and Eli are the best characters I‘ve read in awhile. Maria is strong, capable, independent and determined. But also fun and entertaining. Eli is a wonderful mix-up of an alpha/beta male and is staid and proper while also being competent in any situation (he‘s also 🔻 1y
robinb hiding a tragic family secret). It is such a pleasure to watch as Maria begins to bring him out of his shell and show him how to live/laugh while he gives her the undivided attention and respect that she‘s never noticed was missing.
So fun, so funny, so sweet and so entertaining/well written. This author is now on my radar. Highly recommend. 5/5⭐️

The NetGalley blurb promised banter and shenanigans and Biller delivered. There were many laugh-out-loud moments in this historical romance set in 1870s Vienna. I enjoyed the setting and the quirky cast of characters, but there are enough unpleasantly odd notes that keep this from being a real winner. I can‘t place my finger on what didn‘t work, but while I laughed a lot, I‘m kind of glad it‘s over. 🤷🏻‍♀️ 3.5 ⭐️ for the banter and shenanigans

robinb 🤣 I loved this one…apparently even the “unpleasantly odd” moments. 😳😂 1y
DGRachel @robinb It took me awhile to figure out what didn‘t work for me, and with the Litsy character limit I couldn‘t do that brainstorming in my review. 😂 It was fun overall, though. 1y
robinb @DGRachel I know what you mean! I need to start editing my reviews…those limits are killing me. 🤪 I‘m too long winded. 🤪🤐 1y
