The Sacred Bridge: A Novel | Anne Hillerman
5 posts | 5 read | 1 to read
“A fine legacy series . . . in the spirit of her late father, Tony.”—Booklist An ancient mystery resurfaces with ramifications for the present day in this gripping chapter in the Leaphorn, Chee & Manuelito series from New York Times bestselling author Anne Hillerman. Sergeant Jim Chee’s vacation to beautiful Antelope Canyon and Lake Powell has a deeper purpose. He’s on a quest to unravel a sacred mystery his mentor, the Legendary Lieutenant Joe Leaphorn, stumbled across decades earlier. Chee’s journey takes a deadly turn when, after a prayerful visit to the sacred Rainbow Bridge, he spots a body floating in the lake. The dead man, a Navajo with a passion for the canyon’s ancient rock art, lived a life filled with many secrets. Discovering why he died and who was responsible involves Chee in an investigation that puts his own life at risk. Back in Shiprock, Officer Bernadette Manuelito is driving home when she witnesses an expensive sedan purposely kill a hitchhiker. The search to find the killer leads her to uncover a dangerous chain of interconnected revelations involving a Navajo Nation cannabis enterprise. But the evil that is unleashed jeopardizes her mother and sister Darleen, and puts Bernie in the deadliest situation of her law enforcement career.

Meh. This was definitely not up to her usual standards. Interestingly, a WWII code talker helped with the audiobook production.

I did figure out the Leaphorn side of the story but it was still a good read. Leaphorn finds a dead body while hunting for a cave with ancient art & stays to help local authorities solve the murder. At home Manuelito observes a vehicular murder along the highway and goes under cover at a local pot farm trying to find answers.

I read and loved every book written by Tony Hillerman. I‘ve also read all of Anne‘s which continue and built on her father‘s characters. This one, unfortunately, has a phoned-in quality and falls flat. Chee and Manuelito are pursuing different crimes in different locations. Chee has gone to Antelope Canyon and discovers a murder. Bernie goes undercover in what should be a hemp farm, but is actually a drug operation. Hopefully awaiting her next.

JoyBlue I'm 47% through. It didn't take long to realize this installment isn't nearly as strong as the others. I'm hopeful Hillerman will get her groove back soon. 12mo

I usually read on ebook but I am enjoying all the textures of a real book. I unexpectedly found it on the shelf at the library.

Although I like her books, this isn't my favorite Anne Hillerman. Jim Chee and Bernie Manuelito are separated and working on two different mysteries. Each mystery is interesting but it felt like two books instead of one cohesive story. I'm using this for #Booked2022 #MakeYourOwnPrompt - A favorite author. @Cinfhen @4thhouseontheleft @BarbaraTheBibliophage

Cinfhen Woohoo!!! I love that idea!!! You might see it again next year 😜 2y
