High school can be hell. Literally. A demonic detective novel best devoured in a single sitting--from acclaimed TV writer Stephen Lloyd. Welcome to Danforth Putnam, boarding school for the elite, sprawled across its own private island off the coast of New England. Sam, a war vet who feels sure hes seen it all, has been called here to find a stolen rare book. But as he corners D&D nerds, grills steroid-raging linemen, and interviews filthy-rich actresses, he soon senses that something far strangerwitchy, in factis afoot. When students start to meet mysterious and gruesome deaths, Sam realizes just how fast the clock is ticking. After joining forces with plucky, epilepsy-defying school reporter Harriet, Sam ventures into increasingly dark territory, unravelling a supernatural mystery that will upend everything he thinks he knows about this schooland then shatter his own reality. Toss Dracula into a blender, throw in a shot of hard-boiled detective fiction, splash in a couple drops of Stranger Things, and pour yourself a nice tall glass of Friend of the Devil.

A fast-paced, well-written short novel. Sam Gregory, insurance investigator, is called to an elite boarding school to find a stolen rare book. As he unravels the clues, the bodies mount and dark truths are revealed. It's fun, it's lightning quick, a mix of hard-boiled noir and supernatural horror that I thoroughly enjoyed.

1. Crime fiction that is grittier and darker than usual. The MC is more likely an anti-hero and morals are grey at best.

2. Most recently, Friend of the Devil.

This was a fun mashup of mystery, noir, and slasher genres. It's a bit, or a lot, bloody, but also very funny at times. I hope it becomes a series.

Set up for some lazy summer reading on my swing. I'm also reading Galliant on my Kindle.

This is a short novella for fans of the occult. Sam, a insurance investigator, and Harriet, a intrepid black girl with epilepsy, are the leads of this tale. Sam is called out to an unusual boarding school that sits on an island. There is a rare book that has gone missing. While Sam starts looking for the book, students start to disappear and there is rumor of strange rituals and grisly discoveries. A fun, and dark speed read.
