so-soStarted off strong, but couldn‘t sustain steam till the end. I think somewhere along the way, the author sort of lost their own thread of thoughts and just inserted random interactions and experiences in the narrative. Characters were poorly developed and not fleshed out enough.
It‘s a good one time read, but I wished I had taken this on audible, rather than buy the expensive physical book.
pickThis historical fiction novel, set mainly in Hawaii, provides an interesting view into the lives of three Korean “picture brides” from just before WWI- through WWII. Basically mail order brides, these young women have only a photograph and a letter about their new spouses. Willow‘s story is most central and this well-performed audiobook is fascinating! The shift in the timeline and narrator at the end makes the book feel a bit abrupt and uneven.
'Miss Willow,' the Pusan Ajimae said, 'you'll be eighteen next year, won't you? What about going to Powa and getting married?'

pickFurthermore, I also liked that the three girls had different experiences, but ultimately leaned on each other for support. This was a great use of the found family trope! Related to that, they also had their own unique stories, and grew throughout the novel. Each of the three main characters showed a lot of character development throughout the course of the book.
Overall, I loved The Picture Bride!
