Catherine de Medici
Catherine de Medici: Renaissance Queen of France | Leonie Frieda
7 posts | 4 read | 15 to read
Poisoner, despot, necromancer -- the dark legend of Catherine de Medici is centuries old. In this critically hailed biography, Leonie Frieda reclaims the story of this unjustly maligned queen to reveal a skilled ruler battling extraordinary political and personal odds -- from a troubled childhood in Florence to her marriage to Henry, son of King Francis I of France; from her transformation of French culture to her fight to protect her throne and her sons' birthright. Based on thousands of private letters, it is a remarkable account of one of the most influential women ever to wear a crown.

The Serpent Queen series. Minnie Driver played Elizabeth 1. She did an excellent job. She was the best character.

When her husband Henry II died during a joust, Catherine de Medici replaced her previous personal device (a rainbow) with a broken lance and a Latin inscription that means “From this come my tears and my pain,“ and I respect her grief but that just feels a little extra.

The series “The serpent queen” on Starz is based on this book. I‘ve read a few books on her already. I can‘t remember exactly which ones😼. She was amazing.

I‘m walking away from this book. My mind is probably not in the right place now for a heavy, at times dry, nonfiction. I‘m very interested in Catherine, and yet the book is not holding my interest. Maybe I‘ll try this later, but for now, I‘m waving goodbye to Catherine.

DivineDiana Good for you! Unless it is required reading, books should be enjoyable. ❤️ 6y
Caroline2 Some historical writers are much better than otters too! Might be worth looking for a different author if you‘re interested in the subject but the book is dry! 👍🏻 6y
Caroline2 Better than otters?! 😂 YES some writers are better than otters!!! (I meant others!) 6y
Librarybelle @Caroline2 🤣🤣🤣 I agree - some writers are better than otters! Usually dry writing doesn‘t bother me, as my background is in history. I think this just isn‘t the right time for me to read it. I‘ll try again later! Thanks for the suggestion! 6y
