The Reluctant Countess
The Reluctant Countess | Eloisa James
5 posts | 2 read
New York Times bestselling author Eloisa James returns to the Would-Be Wallflowers series with a sparkling romance between a proper earl and the lady who is entirely inappropriate for him-who he can't stop thinking about. Giles Renwick, Earl of Lilford, has never made a fool of himself over a woman-until he meets Lady Yasmin Rgnier. Yasmin is ineligible for his attentions in every way: not as a wife, certainly not as a mistress (she is a lady!), nor even as a friend, since they vehemently dislike each other. Her gowns are too low, and her skirts are dampened to cling to admittedly lovely thighs. She loves to gossip-and giggle. She isn't dignified, or polite, or even truly British, given that her father's French ancestry clearly predominated. Not to mention the fact that her mother had been one of Napoleon's mistresses, a fact she makes no effort to hide. So what-in heaven's name-possesses him to propose? And what will he do if she says yes?

Mehso-so

Let me preface by saying I‘m a huge James fan. She‘s always been a writer that I measure other historical romance writers by. However I haven‘t read her in awhile as I‘ve been more into mysteries. This book did not seem like it came from her at all. The writing didn‘t move me (as hers always does), and the H/h had no charisma. The hero was spineless, the heroine back and forth on her decisions, and the intimacy felt sudden for the lack of 🔻

robinb courtship involved. The H‘s sister, who played the villain, never got her comeuppance, and the ending had no flair or specialness to it. This was 2nd in a series so I had no background to guide me. Normally authors provide some insight so the reader doesn‘t feel lost because of what they‘ve missed…but I felt 🔻 1y
robinb thrown into a narrative that I knew nothing about. I was disappointed because I know the genius of James. I look forward to better things from her. 2.75/5⭐️ (edited) 1y
Bklover I‘ve not read one of hers yet but would like to. Which is your favorite? 1y

robinb As I said it‘s been awhile (quite a few years) since I‘ve read her, but her Essex Sisters series and her Desperate Duchesses series are both good. The Wilde series is more recent but I‘ve only read the first one (it was good!). I‘ll list first titles in each series below. 🔻 1y

Desperate: Desperate Duchesses
The Wildes: Wilde in Love

Do you have any recommended authors? I‘m always looking for good undiscovered ones. 😊
