Superfluous Women: A Daisy Dalrymple Mystery | Carola Dunn
6 posts | 5 read | 3 to read
In England in the late 1920s, The Honourable Daisy Dalrymple Fletcher, on a convalescent trip to the countryside, goes to visit three old school friends in the area. The three, all unmarried, have recently bought a house together. They are a part of the generation of "superfluous women"brought up expecting marriage and a family, but left without any prospects after more than 700,000 British men were killed in the Great War. Daisy and her husband AlecDetective Chief Inspector Alec Fletcher, of Scotland Yard go for a Sunday lunch with Daisy's friends, where one of the women mentions a wine cellar below their house, which remains curiously locked, no key to be found. Alec offers to pick the lock, but when he opens the door, what greets them is not a cache of wine, but the stench of a long-dead body. And with that, what was a pleasant Sunday lunch has taken an unexpected turn. Now Daisy's three friends are the most obvious suspects in a murder and her husband Alec is a witness, so he can't officially take over the investigation. So before the local detective, Superintendent Underwood, can officially bring charges against her friends, Daisy is determined to use all her resources (Alec) and skills to solve the mystery behind this perplexing locked-room crime.

I was right, satisfied sigh. But, it wasn‘t till the very end that my instinct was proven true. Three women left single because of the war, move to a small town together. A dead body is discovered in their basement when they finally are able to break in on the day Daisy and her Scotland Yard husband are visiting.

The penultimate Daisy Dalrymple series entry, and I was left slightly confused and just feeling meh about the storyline. It starts out interesting - a body in the cellar leads to an investigation around the identity and the murderer. My confusion may lie in listening to multiple books in the series with secondary characters sounding the same in each book. Just one more to go!

This series has run it's course for me. I didn't enjoy this one as much as others, the mystery was a bit dull and Daisy was very annoying ... More annoying than usual

One of my #shelfofshame books because I swear I've read the first 3 chapters multiple times and then stopped reading

Nice, cozy mystery. I will probably read more from this series. It was a bit repetitive in some places and I felt the ending was rushed, but overall an enjoyable read. 3.5/5 stars.

Trying out a Daisy Dalrymple Mystery. So far it fits perfectly into the category of cozy, British mystery....which I love❤️ Perfect for snowy Sunday morning.
Also thinking of all those Canadian men and women who gave their lives in WWI and WWII. Reading historical fiction and history books has made me especially sensitive to the sacrifice these young men and women made.
